Product Description

Mabon celebrates the Autumnal Equinox, when the days are getting shorter and the nights have a distinctive chill. This wrap is inspired by the equinox’s balance of light and dark, the fiery red of leaves changing colors before they blanket the forest floor, and the seeds of hope that we plant in fall to get us through the long winter ahead.

The shawl begins at the center top with a garter stitch tab, and is worked down as a triangular shawl until the depth is reached, then the two sides are worked separately with shaping along the edges to create each half of the wrap.

Mabon Knitted Shawl by Amanda Scheuzger

What Is Being Made

Mabon is an advanced-level knitted wrap shawl designed to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox. This elegantly proportioned garment measures approximately 82 inches (208 centimeters) along the top edge and 17 inches (43 centimeters) in width, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering during the transitional autumn season. The design draws inspiration from the seasonal balance of light and dark, the vibrant fiery red of fall foliage, and the symbolic seeds of hope planted in autumn for enduring through winter.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This shawl employs a top-down construction method, beginning at the center top edge. The design incorporates multiple stitch patterns to create visual interest and textural variety throughout the piece. The knitter will work with both garter stitch sections and lace pattern sections, requiring attention to gauge and tension across different stitch types. The use of a cable needle indicates that cable techniques are incorporated into the design, adding dimensional detail to the finished wrap. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction progress throughout the project.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Mabon shawl features two primary stitch patterns with distinct gauge requirements. Garter stitch sections, created by knitting every row, provide a stable, textured foundation and are worked to a gauge of 24 stitches and 45 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when blocked. Lace pattern sections introduce openwork details and are worked to a gauge of 24 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when blocked. The inclusion of cable techniques adds structural interest and three-dimensional texture to the design.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses Wooly Wonka Nimue Sock yarn, a luxury blend combining 50% silk and 50% superwash merino wool. This fiber composition creates a fabric with excellent drape, subtle sheen from the silk content, and easy-care properties from the superwash treatment. The yarn is worked at a 4-ply weight (fingering weight), which allows for detailed stitch definition and delicate lace work. Two colors are used: Barn Door (main color) and Gray Goose (contrast color), with one skein of each required. Each skein provides 435 yards (398 meters) per 100 grams.

Needles and Notions

Construction requires a Size 5 US (3.75 millimeter) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 centimeters) in length. The circular needle accommodates the width of the shawl while allowing for the top-down construction method. Knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to achieve the correct gauge for both garter stitch and lace pattern sections. Additional notions include a cable needle for executing cable techniques, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project.

Difficulty Level

Mabon is rated as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills. The combination of multiple stitch patterns, cable techniques, color work, and the precision required to maintain consistent gauge across different stitch types makes this an engaging project for advanced crafters seeking a sophisticated seasonal accessory.
