Luminosity Shawl by Ashley Knowlton
What is Being Made
Luminosity is an advanced knitting pattern for a large triangular shawl designed by Ashley Knowlton. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a stunning wingspan shawl measuring 74 inches (188 centimeters) from wingtip to wingtip and 29 inches (73.5 centimeters) deep. The design features lace repeats throughout, making it an elegant accessory suitable for experienced knitters seeking a sophisticated project.
Techniques Used
This shawl employs several advanced knitting techniques characteristic of lace shawl construction. The pattern utilizes lace repeats as a primary design element, which can be increased or decreased to customize the final yardage requirements. The shawl is worked on circular needles, a common approach for large triangular shawls that allows for easy stitch management across an expanding number of stitches. Blocking is an essential finishing technique for this project, as it helps shape and even out the delicate lace pattern. The pattern notes that Star Stitches are optional embellishments that can be added using a crochet hook, providing additional texture and visual interest to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is Stockinette stitch, which serves as the foundation for the shawl. The gauge for Stockinette stitch is 13 stitches and 23 rows per 4 by 4 inches (10 by 10 centimeters). The pattern incorporates lace stitches throughout the design, creating openwork sections that contribute to the shawl's ethereal appearance. Optional Star Stitches can be worked with a crochet hook for those who wish to add dimensional embellishment.
Materials
- Yarn: 520 yards (480 meters) of fingering weight yarn. The sample shown uses Handmaiden Sea Silk 150, a luxurious blend of 70% silk and 30% Seacell with 654 yards (598 meters) per 150-gram skein, in the colorway Periwinkle. Note that increasing or decreasing the number of lace repeats in the pattern will adjust the required yardage accordingly.
- Needles: US 6 (4mm) circular needle, at least 32 inches (80 centimeters) long
- Notions: Crochet hook (optional, for Star Stitches), stitch markers, tapestry needle, and blocking pins and/or wires
Gauge and Fiber Considerations
The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 23 rows in Stockinette stitch over 4 by 4 inches (10 by 10 centimeters). However, the pattern notes that due to the nature of silk, the shawl is likely to shrink or grow in any direction, and correct gauge is not crucial to the success of this project. This flexibility acknowledges the unique properties of silk fibers and allows knitters some freedom in their tension and blocking approach.
