What is Being Made
Luftballon is a crescent-shaped shawl named after the Danish word for "air balloon." This knitted shawl is worked in one piece from the top down, creating an elegant accessory with generous dimensions. The finished shawl measures 220 centimeters across the top edge and 48 centimeters in height (measurements taken after blocking).
Craft and Construction Technique
This is an advanced-level knitting project that employs a top-down construction method. The shawl is worked as a single continuous piece, beginning with a small cast-on and expanding outward through increases worked according to a stitch chart. This construction approach allows for seamless integration of shaping and pattern work throughout the design.
Stitches and Pattern Work
The Luftballon shawl is worked according to a charted stitch pattern (Chart 1). The pattern requires attention to gauge and precise stitch placement. Knitters must maintain consistent tension and follow the chart carefully throughout the 90-centimeter initial pattern section, as the shawl's distinctive crescent shape develops through strategic increases and pattern repeats.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Yarn Weight: DK weight yarn (200–210 meters per 100 grams)
Fiber Content: Wool or wool blend yarns are recommended. The pictured sample was worked in a 50% Merino and 50% silk wool blend (Chesterwool, 212 meters per 100 grams).
Yardage: 550–600 grams of yarn is required to complete the shawl.
Needles and Notions
- One 4 mm circular needle, 80 centimeters (32 inches) or longer for comfort during working
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
- Rust-proof pins for blocking the finished shawl
Gauge
Pattern gauge according to Chart 1: 22 stitches and 27 rows over 10 centimeters (10x10 cm). Achieving proper gauge is essential, as every knitter's tension is unique. Knitters should swatch and adjust needle size as necessary to match the specified gauge before beginning the project.
