Product Description
A little bit of this and a little bit of that creates something new and wonderful. Lovely Stripes takes the eyelets from the Lovely Eyelets shawl and the stripes from 8 Simple Stripes and creates a larger, lighter, and airier shawl with lots of design versatility. It's perfect for mini skeins, fade sets, complementary or contrasting colours, or even a single shade.
The pattern is written for a mini-skein set of 5 colours (SweetGeorgia Party of Five in Royals) plus an additional skein of a 6th colour (SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock in Lilac) but includes a yarn use diagram to help you plan alternate yarn combinations. It is also shown here in a Koigu Pencil Box mini-skein set.
Skills required: Increasing, decreasing, knitting eyelets, changing yarns for stripes, blocking your shawl. Stitches used: k, p, kfb, k2tog, yo.
Pattern includes written instructions, list of abbreviations, diagram, and notes.
Lovely Stripes Sideways Asymmetrical Shawl
What Is Being Made
Lovely Stripes is a sideways asymmetrical shawl designed by Michelle Krause. This knitting pattern creates a larger, lighter, and airier shawl that combines eyelet details with striped colorwork. The design is versatile and works beautifully with mini-skein sets, fade sets, complementary color combinations, or a single solid shade.
Design Features and Versatility
The Lovely Stripes shawl draws inspiration from two distinct design elements: the eyelets from the Lovely Eyelets shawl and the stripes from the 8 Simple Stripes pattern. By combining these techniques, the pattern creates something new and wonderful—a shawl with significant design versatility. This makes it an excellent choice for knitters who want to experiment with color, whether using a coordinated mini-skein set of five colors plus an additional contrasting or complementary skein, or keeping the entire shawl in a single shade.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern incorporates fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters:
- Eyelet work: Creates decorative openwork details that add visual interest and airiness to the finished shawl
- Striped colorwork: Uses multiple colors worked in stripes to build the overall design
- Sideways construction: The shawl is knitted from side to side, which affects how the fabric drapes and how colors are introduced
- Asymmetrical shaping: Creates an interesting silhouette and allows for creative color placement
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Lovely Stripes pattern uses essential knitting stitches and abbreviations including:
- k: Knit stitch—the fundamental knit stitch
- p: Purl stitch—the reverse of the knit stitch
- k2tog: Knit 2 stitches together—a common decrease that reduces stitch count
- kfb: Knit into front and back of stitch—an increase technique that adds stitches
- kwise: Knitwise—inserting the needle as if to knit
Color abbreviations used throughout the pattern include MC (main color), C1 (color 1), C2 (color 2), C3 (color 3), C4 (color 4), and C5 (color 5), allowing knitters to organize their yarn selections clearly.
Materials and Yarn Weight
Lovely Stripes is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight, drapey fabric ideal for a shawl. The pattern is specifically written to accommodate a mini-skein set of five colors plus one additional skein of a sixth color. This structure makes the pattern perfect for using fade sets or coordinated color collections, though knitters can also choose to work the entire shawl in a single shade for a more minimalist aesthetic. The 4-ply weight ensures the finished shawl will be airy and suitable for layering.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters who are new to shawl construction. The combination of basic stitches, straightforward color changes, and the sideways construction method make Lovely Stripes an excellent introduction to shawl knitting without overwhelming complexity.
