Lovely Socks by Ann Kingstone

What is Being Made

Lovely Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by independent designer Ann Kingstone for creating custom-fit socks. The pattern accommodates three different foot circumference sizes—up to 20½cm (8"), 23cm (9"), and 25½cm (10")—with customizable foot length to ensure a personalized fit for the wearer. This project is ideal for knitters seeking to craft comfortable, well-fitted hosiery.

Craft and Technique

This is an advanced-level knitting project worked in the round using the stranded colorwork technique. Stranded knitting involves carrying two colors of yarn simultaneously across the fabric, creating intricate patterns by alternating which color is active. This method produces a dense, elastic fabric particularly well-suited to socks, as it provides structure and durability in areas subject to frequent wear.

The pattern requires proficiency with small-diameter circular needles and familiarity with tension management when working with multiple colors. Knitters will need to adjust their needle size as necessary to achieve the specified gauge, ensuring the finished socks fit properly and have the correct stretch and recovery characteristics.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined in a structured approach:

  • Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
  • Purl (p) – used selectively within the pattern structure
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
  • Purl 2 together (p2tog) – a decrease worked in purl
  • Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp) – a left-leaning decrease
  • Make 1 from back (m1b) – an increase created by lifting the strand between stitches and knitting into it
  • Slip stitch (sl) – stitches slipped either knitwise or purlwise as instructed
  • Stocking stitch (stockinette) – the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working circularly)

The pattern also incorporates stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, with instructions to slip markers as you encounter them during knitting.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern requires 200 metres (220 yards) each of main color (MC) and contrast color (CC) in 4ply sock yarn, for a total of 400 metres (440 yards). The pictured sample was knitted using Artist's Palette 'Smoothie Sock' yarn. The 4ply weight—a lightweight, tightly twisted yarn—is specifically engineered for sock construction, offering the elasticity and durability necessary for garments that endure repeated stretching and friction.

Needles and Notions: Knitters will need 2.5mm/US 1½ and 2.75mm/US 2 circular needles sized for small-diameter knitting (your preferred method for small circumference work). Two stitch markers are required to track pattern repeats and key construction points throughout the project.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a gauge of 38 stitches and 40 rounds per 10cm (4") when working the stranded pattern in the round on the larger needle. Achieving this gauge is essential for proper fit; knitters should swatch before beginning and adjust needle size up or down as necessary to match the specified tension. This careful attention to gauge ensures the socks will fit the intended foot circumference and provide appropriate stretch and recovery.
