Lovely Linen Cowl by MaryG Knits
Project Overview
The Lovely Linen Cowl is a sophisticated knit accessory designed for warm-weather wear in Spring and Summer. This cowl is knit in the round from the neck down, featuring a subtle mitering construction that increases the versatility and wearability of the finished piece. The design works up quickly, making it an ideal project for experienced knitters seeking an elegant, lightweight layering piece.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a neck cowl—a tubular, collar-style accessory that drapes around the neck and shoulders. The mitered shaping allows the cowl to sit comfortably at various heights and fits a range of neck sizes, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe. The linen construction ensures breathability and a refined drape suitable for seasonal layering.
Yarn and Materials
- Yardage Required: Approximately 270 yards of sport-weight yarn
- Fiber Content: 100% linen for a breathable, natural finish
- Sample Yarn: One skein of Claudia Hand-Painted 100% linen in the colorway "Electric"
- Needles: US #5 (3.75mm) 16-inch circular needles
- Notions: Two stitch markers—one to mark the beginning of round and one to mark the center front stitch
Gauge and Fit
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches by 28 rounds over 4 inches in the mock-cable ribbing stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for correct fit and drape of this cowl design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed for experienced knitters with strong chart-reading skills. The pattern combines both charted instructions and text directions, requiring the ability to interpret stitch symbols and follow complex written instructions simultaneously.
Mock-Cable Rib Stitch Pattern
The cowl features a Mock-Cable Rib stitch pattern, a textured repeat that creates visual interest and structure. This stitch is worked in the round over a 6-stitch multiple and 4-round repeat:
- Round 1: [Knit 1, purl 1, slip 1, knit 2, pass slipped stitch over both knitted stitches, purl 1], repeat around
- Round 2: [Knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, yarn over, knit 1, purl 1], repeat around
- Rounds 3 & 4: [Knit 1, purl 1, knit 3, purl 1], repeat around
The mock-cable rib combines knit and purl stitches with decreases (pass slipped stitch over) and yarn overs to create a cable-like texture without the complexity of traditional cable crossing. This stitch pattern provides both elasticity and visual definition to the finished cowl.
Construction Method
The cowl is constructed by knitting in the round from the neck, using circular needles to create a seamless, continuous tube. The mitering technique—a gradual shaping method—is incorporated into the construction to create subtle increases in width, allowing the cowl to be worn at different heights and accommodate various neck sizes. This thoughtful design detail enhances the accessory's versatility and wearability.
Skill Requirements
This pattern is intended for advanced knitters who are comfortable reading knitting charts, interpreting stitch abbreviations, and managing multiple stitch markers. Familiarity with techniques such as yarn overs, decreases, and working in the round is essential. The combination of charted and written instructions requires the ability to seamlessly transition between both formats.
