Product Description
These charming socks feature a textured heart surrounded by elegant cables which wind their way down the front panel of the socks. The socks are knitted from the top down and use a varying amount of yarn depending on the length of foot knitted. A women's UK size 7 sock for example, will leave approximately 20g of yarn unworked, which would be ample to work an extra pattern repeat in the leg of each sock if preferred. Approximately 240m is required to knit the same size socks as shown. The pattern is written assuming DPNs will be used so if you use a different technique, pay particular attention to division and positioning of stitches on the needles.
Explanation is provided in the pattern for adjusting the foot length of the sock to achieve a good fit. The pattern contains both written and charted instructions for the front panel and each size has its own chart. Each line of the chart is read from right to left.
A very straight forward pattern suitable for all knitters.
Love Hearts Socks by Susan Crawford Vintage
What is Being Made
The Love Hearts socks are a charming knitted sock design created by independent designer Susan Crawford Vintage. These socks feature decorative heart motifs worked into the fabric and are designed to be knitted from the top down. The pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters and produces socks in multiple sizes, with the sample shown in a women's UK size 7 (EU 41 / US 9.5).
Knitting Techniques Used
This sock pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The socks are worked in the round, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for sock construction. The pattern uses charted colorwork to incorporate the decorative heart design throughout the sock. Knitters will need to be comfortable with working from charts and managing multiple stitches across double-pointed needles. The top-down construction method allows knitters to customize the foot length before binding off, providing flexibility in yarn usage and fit.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Love Hearts socks are constructed using stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic sock texture. The gauge for this pattern is 28 stitches and 42 rounds over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in the round before blocking. The charted heart motifs measure approximately 8 centimeters (3¼ inches) wide by 2½ centimeters (1 inch) tall when knitted in the round and before blocking. Stitch markers are used throughout the pattern to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistency across the sock circumference.
Yarn and Materials
The Love Hearts socks are designed to be knitted using Susan Crawford Ghyll yarn in Sportweight, a premium yarn composed of 100% Lancashire Lonk wool. One skein of yarn is required, with each skein containing 300 meters (328 yards) per 100 grams. The sample shown was knitted in the shade Jo. The pattern is designed to use a varying amount of yarn depending on the desired foot length, with approximately 20 grams of yarn remaining unworked after completing a women's UK size 7 sock.
Needles and Tools
This pattern requires double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round. For the smaller sock size, 2.75mm (US 2) DPNs are suggested, while the larger size uses 3mm (US 3) DPNs. A 3mm (US 3) cable needle is also listed in the materials, and stitch markers are essential notions for tracking pattern repeats and maintaining proper stitch placement throughout the sock construction. Knitters may need to adjust needle sizes to achieve the correct gauge as specified in the pattern.
