Product Description

We all need a bit more of love and energy - so why not surround myself with it, I thought. Some weeks later I had created this extraordinary cowl. It is made of extremely soft wool and is a real pleasure to wear. If you don't mind curious and admiring looks of some passersby ;-)

In order to knit yourself this special cowl, you need the following skills:

- double knitting technique in general - knit, purl, knit in back loop - invisible cast on / bind off (for both techniques you will find video tutorials in the web)

The pattern consists of two colour coded chart patterns and a short instruction how to proceed.

Loop Love and Energy Cowl – Advanced Double-Sided Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Loop Love and Energy is a sophisticated cowl design created by a-mano, measuring 54 x 29 cm when finished. This piece is a double-sided knitted cowl, meaning both sides of the fabric are finished and visually interesting, making it reversible and wearable from either direction. The cowl combines three distinct colors in a coordinated colorway to create visual depth and interest.

Knitting Techniques and Methods

This advanced-level pattern employs double-sided knitting as its primary technique, a sophisticated approach that creates a reversible fabric with finished edges on both sides. The pattern begins with an invisible cast on for double knitting, a specialized cast-on method that creates a seamless, professional foundation. The invisible cast on uses two colors simultaneously—Black (which appears as knit stitches) and Fuchsia (which appears as purl stitches)—establishing 104 stitches in each color from the outset. The pattern is worked from a knitting chart, which provides visual guidance for the color placement and stitch sequences throughout the piece. Completion of the cowl employs an invisible bind off, a finishing technique that creates a seamless closure matching the cast-on edge, requiring an additional circular needle and a sewing needle to execute properly.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches adapted for double-sided knitting construction. Knit stitches and purl stitches form the basis of the fabric, with their placement determined by the color being worked and the chart instructions. The double knitting technique requires careful attention to stitch orientation and color changes to maintain the reversible quality of the finished piece.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn Options: The pattern provides flexibility in yarn selection. The recommended materials consist of DK weight yarns in three colors:

  • 1 x 50 gr Rico Baby Classic DK in Fuchsia (165 m per 50 gr)
  • 1 x 50 gr Phildar Caresse in Ecru or Blanc (146 m per 50 gr)—the pictured sample uses Ecru
  • 2 x 50 gr Phildar Caresse in Black (146 m per 50 gr)

Alternatively, crafters may substitute by using only Rico Baby Classic DK in three different colors, or exclusively Phildar Caresse in three different colors, providing customization options based on yarn availability or preference.

Needles and Tools: The pattern requires 1 x 60 cm circular knitting needle in 3.5 mm (US size 4), plus 1 x additional circular needle and 1 x sewing needle for the invisible bind off technique.

Gauge: The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 19 stitches and 27 rows per 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches), which is typical for DK weight yarn on size 3.5 mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the finished cowl to reach its intended measurements.

Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level

This pattern is worked in DK weight (also classified as sport weight), a medium-weight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and structure. The advanced difficulty level reflects the specialized techniques required, particularly the invisible cast on for double knitting and the invisible bind off, which demand experience and precision. This cowl is best suited for knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire.
