Product Description
The pretty panel consists of a lacy eyelet diamond on a reverse stocking stitch background. The panels are framed with columns at each side in an easy twisted rib. The twisted rib edging is used to frame the borders of the keyhole neck detail, which is worked in one with the main body of the front. Nothing to stitch on! The ends of the neck ties can be decorated with small buttons or even beads if desired.

Long Line Tie Neck Vest-Top by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
The Long Line Tie Neck Vest-Top is a knitted sleeveless garment designed as an intermediate-level project. This vest-top features a distinctive tie neck detail and an extended length that creates a long line silhouette. The pattern is available in six size options, accommodating bust measurements from 81-137 cm (32-54 inches), with actual finished bust measurements ranging from 94-144 cm (37-57 inches). The length to shoulder shaping is approximately 58-61 cm (23-24 inches) depending on size, making this a versatile piece suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone top.
Craft and Techniques
This project is executed entirely through knitting, making it ideal for crafters with intermediate-level skills. The garment construction relies on fundamental knitting techniques combined with shaping methods to achieve the fitted vest silhouette. The tie neck detail requires careful attention to construction, adding a design element that distinguishes this piece from basic vest patterns. Knitters will need to understand tension control and basic garment assembly to successfully complete this project.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout this vest-top is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. Stocking stitch is worked by alternating knit and purl rows, producing the characteristic V-pattern texture on the right side of the fabric. This fundamental stitch provides an excellent canvas for showcasing yarn color and texture, particularly important given the yarn choice of Stories Fine Merino DK in the Bluebell shade.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for Yarn Stories Fine Merino DK, a fingering to light worsted weight yarn that offers 120 metres (131 yards) per 50g ball. The yarn requirement varies by size, ranging from 7 to 10 balls of 50g, depending on which size is being knitted. The recommended shade is Bluebell, though the pattern notes that yarn or color availability may change, and crafters should select replacement yarns that match the stated tension.
The pattern requires two pairs of knitting needles: one pair of 3.25 mm (UK 10/US 3) needles and one pair of 4 mm (UK 8/US 6) needles. The smaller needles are typically used for ribbed edgings or cuffs to create elasticity, while the larger needles accommodate the main body fabric. Additionally, one stitch holder is needed to temporarily hold stitches during garment construction, particularly useful when working the tie neck detail.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is critical for this project's success. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using the 4 mm needles. Knitters are strongly advised to test their tension before beginning the main project by knitting a gauge swatch, as tension variations directly affect finished garment measurements. If the test swatch is too loose, a finer needle should be used; if too tight, a larger needle is recommended.
Pattern Format
This design is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The format allows for easy printing and reference while working on the project.
