Lone Star Hat by Corrine Walcher
What is Being Made
The Lone Star Hat is a knitted beanie designed to celebrate Texas State Flag imagery. Created by designer Corrine Walcher, this hat features a finished circumference of 21.75 inches and measures 8 inches from hem to tip, making it easily adjustable for different head sizes. The design was inspired by a personal request for a Texas-themed hat, crafted during a historical weather event while the designer was settling into East Texas.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to construct the hat. The pattern uses knitting in the round for the crown shaping, allowing for seamless construction of small circumferences. The hat is worked using stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. Color work is incorporated to display the Texas State Flag design, requiring the knitter to manage multiple yarn colors throughout the pattern. The design includes decreases for crown shaping, tapering the hat from the full circumference down to the tip.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Lone Star Hat pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters:
- K (Knit): The basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
- P (Purl): The reverse knit stitch used for texture variation
- K2tog (Knit two together): A right-leaning decrease used for crown shaping
- SSK (Slip, slip, knit): A left-leaning decrease for balanced decreases
- K1B (Knit 1 stitch with blue): Color work stitch using blue yarn
- K1W (Knit 1 stitch with white): Color work stitch using white yarn
- Sl1-k2tog-psso (Slip 1, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over): A centered double decrease used for shaping the hat crown
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Lone Star Hat pattern recommends Plymouth Encore yarn, a worsted weight blend composed of 75% acrylic and 25% wool, offering durability and easy care. The sample project uses approximately 200 yards total, distributed as 60 yards of white, 45 yards of red, and 10 yards of blue to create the flag design. The pattern is flexible and accommodates any worsted or light worsted weight yarn, allowing knitters to substitute based on personal preference or yarn availability.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern calls for US size 4 (3.5 mm) needles for knitting the hat straight, with the option to use your preferred method for knitting small circumferences in the round, such as double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop technique. The required gauge is 18 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches in blocked stockinette stitch when knit flat, ensuring proper fit and drape. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to obtain the specified gauge for accurate finished dimensions.
