Product Description

This is a somewhat complicated but ultimately satisfying project that uses a small amount of luxury laceweight yarn.

For my sample, I used one 50g skein of Chianti Sustainable Cashmere®. My project took 44g, but it could easily be made one–or even two–repeats shorter or longer, depending on your yarn supply.

Other yarns such as Cascade Alpaca Lace or silk/mohair blends would also work well for this project.

If your gauge is off by a stitch it's not the end of the world.

Not for beginners • requires a lot of concentration!

Little Twig Luxury Lace Cowl by Cheryl Niamath

What is Being Made

The Little Twig is a luxury laceweight cowl designed by Cheryl Niamath as an intermediate knitting project. This cowl is a sophisticated neckwear piece that showcases delicate lace patterning while maintaining practical wearability. The finished cowl measures 19 inches in circumference when unstretched and stands 15.5 inches in length, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece.

Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work

This project employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques that work together to create the finished lace cowl. The pattern utilizes circular knitting worked in the round, which ensures seamless construction and allows for continuous pattern repeats around the circumference. The design incorporates a specialized twig lace pattern that forms the primary visual and textural element of the cowl.

The stitch work includes essential knitting abbreviations and techniques:

  • Garter stitch in the round — created by alternating knit rounds with purl rounds to produce a textured, reversible fabric
  • K2tog (knit 2 together) — a fundamental decrease technique used within the lace pattern to create the characteristic openwork and shaping
  • Cast on and bind off techniques — essential edge finishing methods for beginning and completing the cowl

The twig lace pattern is worked at a gauge of 30 stitches and 39 rounds per 4 inches when blocked, which is typical for laceweight yarns and creates an airy, delicate fabric with defined stitch definition.

Materials and Construction Details

The Little Twig is designed to use a single skein of luxury laceweight yarn, making it an efficient project for showcasing premium fibers. The recommended yarn is a cashmere or cashmere blend laceweight weighing 50 grams with approximately 247 yards (225 meters) of yardage. Cheryl Niamath specified using Chianti Sustainable Cashmere® Two-Ply, which contains 85% cashmere and 15% bamboo, though any comparable luxury laceweight yarn would be suitable. The actual project uses 44 grams of yarn, leaving flexibility to adjust the cowl length by working one or two additional repeats of the pattern if yarn supply permits, or conversely, shortening the design if needed.

The project requires a 3mm circular needle in 16-inch length for working in the round, along with 12 stitch markers (with one distinctly different marker to denote the beginning of rounds) and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The use of circular needles eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric ideal for neckwear.

Difficulty Level and Craftsmanship

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Little Twig requires knitters to have solid foundational skills including comfort with circular needle techniques, pattern reading, and lace construction. The pattern notes indicate this is "somewhat complicated but ultimately satisfying," suggesting that while the project presents challenges, the results justify the effort invested. Cheryl Niamath emphasizes reading the Helpful Hints section before beginning, indicating that understanding key techniques and pattern-specific guidance is important for successful completion of this luxury cowl.
