Little Grey Stormclouds Knit Mitts by Joy Gerhardt
What Is Being Made
Little Grey Stormclouds is a pair of open-thumb knit mitts designed for quick, satisfying projects. These fingerless mitts feature a short hand length that keeps your fingers completely free for continued crafting or everyday tasks. The design prioritizes instant gratification knitting with straightforward construction from cast on to finished edge, making them ideal for knitters seeking a fast, rewarding project without complicated techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The construction uses in-the-round knitting, worked on double-pointed needles or a circular needle depending on your preference. The mitts feature a faux cable rib stitch pattern combined with stockinette stitch sections. The design deliberately avoids complex elements—no scrap yarn management, no cable needles required, and no intricate shaping. The open thumb construction simplifies the pattern further by eliminating thumb gusset increases or decreases.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Faux cable rib: Creates textured interest without requiring cable needles, worked in the round with a gauge of 30 stitches and 56 rows per 4 inches (10cm) when stretched
- Stockinette stitch: Smooth knit fabric worked in the round, measuring 34 stitches and 54 rows per 4 inches (10cm)
- Ribbing: Provides fitted edges at the wrist and hand openings
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: Shibui Knits Sock in Graphite colorway, 100% Merino wool, with yardage of 191 yards (175 meters) per 50-gram ball. One ball of yarn is sufficient to complete the project. This yarn weight classification spans 3-ply and 4-ply specifications, ideal for creating fabric with excellent stitch definition.
Needles: US1.5 (2.5mm) double-pointed needles or circular needle, sized to achieve proper gauge. Adjust needle size as needed to match the specified gauge of 30 stitches and 56 rows per 4 inches in faux cable rib.
Additional supplies: One yarn needle for weaving in ends and two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points.
