Little Enchanting Object by Bunnymuff - Mona Zillah

Project Overview

Little Enchanting Object is a free downloadable knit pattern designed by Mona Zillah (bunnymuff) for creating handknit coasters. This pattern is ideal for table settings and combines functional design with decorative embroidered details. The coasters serve as charming, handmade additions to any tea service or dining experience, embodying the therapeutic qualities of fine craftsmanship and mindful design.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces handknit coasters featuring embroidered decorative elements. Each individual coaster is a small, practical textile piece designed to protect surfaces while adding an enchanting, artisanal touch to table settings. The coasters are worked flat using cast-on stitches and incorporate both knit structure and embroidery for visual interest.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Long-tail cast-on method (unless otherwise noted in pattern instructions)
  • Flat knitting construction
  • Bind-off finishing
  • Hand embroidery applied to completed knit base

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – The primary stitch forming the coaster structure
  • Purl (p) – Used in combination with knit stitches for textured or patterned design
  • Bind off – Finishing technique to secure stitches

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: Plötulopi – Unspun Icelandic by Ístex, a DK weight (8 ply) yarn composed of 100% Icelandic wool. The full skein contains 328 yards (300 meters) per 100 grams. For individual coasters, approximately 4 grams or 13 yards (12 meters) of main yarn is required per coaster. Additional small quantities of yarn in a variety of colors should be reserved for embroidery details, planning approximately 1 yard (1 meter) of embroidery yarn per coaster per color used.

Needles and Gauge

Needles: The pattern calls for two sets of double-pointed needles (DPNs) in 6-inch (15-centimeter) length: one set of 4 needles in 3.5mm (US No. 4) size and one set of 4 needles in 4.0mm (US No. 6) size.

Gauge: The pattern is worked to a gauge of 5 stitches by 6 rows per 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) when measured over the knit fabric.

Design Details

The Little Enchanting Object pattern emphasizes handcrafted beauty and mindful creation. By combining simple knit construction with personalized embroidery, crafters can create unique, one-of-a-kind coasters that reflect both technical skill and artistic expression. The use of unspun Icelandic wool adds texture and authenticity to the finished pieces, making them suitable for both personal use and gift-giving.
