Product Description

This is a simple and unique blanket, made using the Filet technique of crochet. This pattern is written in UK and US terms. Just download whichever version you prefer. It is such an addictive technique to use as you slowly see the pattern emerging with each finished row.

It uses DK yarn and a 4.0 mm hook but you can use any to suit your preference but this will alter the size of your blanket. It uses approximately 400g of yarn. 100g for each duck panel and 100g for the separating sections and border if made following this pattern. A larger blanket will need more yarn.

The pattern consists of written instructions as well as a chart. There are instructions on how to amend the size of the blanket too.

Little Ducks Blanket by Stitched Up By Emma

Project Overview

The Little Ducks Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket featuring a charming duck design created using filet crochet techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Stitched Up By Emma produces a finished blanket measuring approximately 26 inches by 29 inches, making it an ideal size for a baby blanket, lap throw, or decorative piece.

Craft and Technique

This project is worked entirely in crochet, specifically utilizing filet crochet as the primary technique. Filet crochet is a classic method that creates an open, lacy fabric through the strategic placement of chain spaces and solid blocks of stitches. This technique allows crafters to follow either a written pattern or a provided chart, offering flexibility for different learning preferences. The open nature of filet crochet creates an elegant, breathable fabric perfect for blankets.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Chain (CH) – The foundation stitch used to create the base of the blanket
  • Double Crochet (DC) – The primary stitch forming solid blocks in the filet pattern
  • Single Crochet (SC) – Used for joining and finishing details
  • Slip Stitch (SLST) – Employed for joining rounds and securing stitches
  • Chain Space (CHSP) – The open spaces created between stitches that form the lacy filet pattern
  • Skip (SK) – Used to create the spacing necessary for filet crochet openings

Materials and Tools

The Little Ducks Blanket requires 400 grams total of Deramores DK weight yarn in four coordinating colors, with 100 grams of each shade:

  • Deramores DK In Blue Velvet (Colour A)
  • Deramores DK In Frost (Colour B)
  • Deramores DK In Mist (Colour C)
  • Deramores DK In Vanilla (Colour D)

DK (Double Knit) weight yarn is a medium-weight option that works beautifully for creating defined stitches and intricate filet patterns. The four-color palette allows for creative color blocking and the duck design to stand out clearly against contrasting backgrounds.

Essential tools include a 4mm crochet hook, which pairs appropriately with DK weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge. Additional supplies needed are scissors for cutting yarn, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optional stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and round beginnings.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 double crochet stitches by 9 rows equaling 4 inches by 4 inches. Achieving this gauge is essential for the blanket to reach its intended finished dimensions of 26 inches by 29 inches. Crafters should work a gauge swatch before beginning the full project to ensure their tension matches the pattern requirements.

Pattern Structure

The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and uses standard crochet notation with brackets and asterisks to indicate pattern repeats. The written instructions work in tandem with a filet chart, allowing crafters to visualize the duck design as they progress. This dual-format approach makes the pattern accessible to both those who prefer written instructions and those who work better from visual charts.
