Product Description

Inspired by the film Lion King, this blanket is a nod to Simba and his dad, Mufasa.

Knitted in DK yarn, the finished size is 60x80cm but can easily be enlarged by adding more rows and columns- I show you where to add within the pattern.

The pattern is simple to follow, and uses 200g of white plus small amounts of other colours so perfect for a stash buster.

Instantly available as a PDF after purchasing, the pattern includes: - chart - full written instructions - photographs

It is knitted in intarsia, a type of knitting which uses multiple colours to create a pattern or image. This is a relatively easy pattern for those new to intarsia as it only uses three colours.

All our patterns are test knitted before publication.

Lion King Baby Blanket by Not Just Nanas Knit

Project Overview

The Lion King Baby Blanket is a downloadable knitting pattern featuring an intarsia design that celebrates the beloved Disney film through a charming depiction of a lion cub and adult lion. Inspired by the iconic characters Simba and Mufasa, this baby blanket combines a striking central image with an elegant lace border, making it a meaningful handmade gift for Lion King fans and new arrivals alike.

What Is Being Made

This is a knitted baby blanket worked from the bottom up, showcasing an intarsia image of a young lion cub positioned in front of an adult lion. The blanket features a decorative lace border that frames the main design. The suggested color palette uses white for the background, grey for the border and cub, and dark grey for the adult lion, though crafters are encouraged to customize colors according to personal preference.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Intarsia knitting: The primary technique used to create the detailed lion imagery, allowing for the seamless integration of multiple colors within the knitted fabric
  • Chart reading: Essential skill required throughout the pattern, as the design relies heavily on following a provided chart for accurate color placement and stitch positioning
  • Lace knitting: Used to create the decorative border that frames the central intarsia design, adding an elegant finishing touch to the blanket
  • Bottom-up construction: The blanket is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easy adjustments to length if desired

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, the design employs standard knitting stitches combined with intarsia techniques for color work and lace stitches for the border detail. The pattern provides full written instructions alongside the chart, making it accessible to intermediate knitters who have experience reading charts and working with multiple colors.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a soft, drape-friendly fabric ideal for a baby blanket. The designer recommends Stylecraft Special DK due to its extensive color range, which facilitates finding the perfect shades for the white background, grey border, grey cub, and dark grey lion. Any quality DK wool yarn will work for this project, giving crafters flexibility in fiber choice and brand selection.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

This blanket pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable reading charts and working with intarsia color techniques. The downloadable PDF format includes comprehensive materials: full written instructions for the entire blanket, a detailed chart for the intarsia lion design, specific image instructions, and separate lace border instructions. This multi-format approach supports various learning styles and ensures clarity throughout the knitting process.
