Product Description
Lil Tamzin is worked from the top down in one piece, absolutely seamlessly using 4-ply / fingering weight yarn. The yoke is knit in Stocking/stockinette stitch and then a simple textured stitch is used for the main body. The cardigan is worked flat until the armholes, at which point it is divided for sleeves and body. The body is then finished flat from the armholes to its garter hem and the sleeves are worked in the round. No finishing is required apart from weaving in ends and sewing on the buttons. Although the cardigan is classed as an intermediate pattern, it is really suitable for an advanced beginner, prepared to tackle a garment, with all the techniques and stitch patterns clearly explained in the pattern.

Lil Tamzin Cardigan by Katya Frankel
What is Being Made
The Lil Tamzin is a children's cardigan designed by Katya Frankel, available in sizes for ages 2, 4, 6, 8-10, and 12 years. This garment is engineered to grow with children at different rates, with chest circumference measurements ranging from 18 ¼ inches to 31 ¼ inches. The pattern includes a schematic to help knitters select the appropriate size based on the individual child's actual chest circumference rather than age alone.
Construction Method
The Lil Tamzin cardigan is worked from the top down in one continuous piece, creating a seamless construction that eliminates the need for seaming. This top-down approach allows for easy customization of length and provides a more comfortable fit for growing children. The garment is completed with minimal finishing—only weaving in ends is required, making this an efficient project from start to finish.
Stitches and Techniques
The yoke section of the cardigan is knit entirely in Stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for showcasing yarn texture and color. The main body transitions to a simple textured stitch that adds visual interest and dimension to the piece. The pattern is rated as Intermediate difficulty, requiring knitters to be comfortable with fundamental techniques including knit and purl stitches, simple increases and decreases, and basic finishing methods.
Yarn and Materials
The Lil Tamzin requires approximately 320 to 590 yards of yarn depending on the size chosen, with yardage ranging from 320 (330, 350, 370, 380, 400, 440, 470, 500, 540) meters or 350 (360, 380, 400, 420, 440, 480, 510, 550, 590) yards. The pattern calls for fingering or sport weight yarn that knits to a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch.
Needles and Notions
- Size 3.5mm (US 4) circular needle, 24 inches / 60 centimeters long
- Size 3.5mm (US 4) needles for any additional techniques required
The circular needle allows for seamless top-down construction and accommodates the increasing stitches required for the yoke-to-body transition, making this needle choice essential for the garment's construction method.
