Product Description

This sweater brings together three of my favorite things - vanishing cables, oversized fit and a lightweight fabric. Combining those three elements makes a cool and modern garment with an eyecatching detail.

The cable pattern is contiguous, beginning from shoulder, continuing on the sleeve and then vanishing. The sweater is worked seamlessly from top down, upper body back and forth and rest of the sweater in the round. Cables have both charts and written instructions. The pattern also includes a construction schematic.

The garment has a generous amount of positive ease. Choose a size that’s approx. 12” / 30,5 cm larger than your actual bust measurement. Sample is size 44” / 112 cm.

GAUGE: 23 sts and 32 rnds in Stockinette stitch using larger needles = 4” / 10 cm after blocking. Please take time to wash and block your swatch. My pre-blocked gauge was 25 sts and 35 rnds per 4” / 10 cm.

Light Trails Oversized Cable Knit Sweater by SuviKnits

Garment Overview

Light Trails is a beautifully designed oversized sweater featuring a striking contiguous cable pattern that originates at the shoulder, travels down the sleeve, and gradually vanishes as it descends. This advanced-level knitting project showcases sophisticated shaping and seamless construction techniques, making it an excellent choice for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and visually rewarding garment.

Construction Method and Techniques

The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down using a hybrid construction approach. The upper body and back are worked flat in back-and-forth rows, while the remainder of the sweater is completed working in the round. This construction method allows for precise shaping at the yoke and shoulders while maintaining the efficiency of circular knitting for the body and sleeves. The seamless approach eliminates seaming and creates a polished, professional finish throughout the garment.

Cable Pattern Details

The signature cable pattern is a continuous design element that begins at the shoulder and flows seamlessly onto the sleeve before gradually diminishing. The cables are presented in two formats within the pattern: detailed stitch charts for visual learners and comprehensive written instructions for those who prefer text-based guidance. This dual-format approach ensures accessibility for knitters with different learning preferences and experience levels.

Sizing and Fit

Light Trails is offered in six generous sizes accommodating bust measurements from 28–30 inches (71–76 cm) up to 48–50 inches (122–127 cm), with finished measurements ranging from 40 inches (102 cm) to 60 inches (152 cm). The garment features a substantial amount of positive ease, and the pattern recommends selecting a size approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) larger than your actual bust measurement to achieve the intended oversized silhouette. The sample shown is size 44 inches (112 cm).

Gauge and Yarn Weight

This pattern uses 4-ply yarn weight and requires careful gauge measurement for proper fit. The post-blocking gauge is 23 stitches and 32 rounds in stockinette stitch over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked on appropriately sized needles. The designer notes that pre-blocked gauge measured 25 stitches and 35 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm), emphasizing the importance of washing and blocking your gauge swatch before beginning the project. Proper blocking significantly affects the final dimensions and drape of the finished sweater.

Stitch Techniques

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for the body and background of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Cable Stitches: Specialized techniques that create the dimensional twisted rope effects flowing from shoulder to sleeve, presented in both charted and written formats
  • Seamless Top-Down Shaping: Advanced yoke and sleeve cap shaping worked without seams for a refined finish

Materials Required

Knitters will need 4-ply weight yarn in an appropriate yardage for their chosen size, along with circular needles and double-pointed needles (or preferred small-circumference knitting method) in the correct size to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and instructions to guide material selection and needle sizing throughout the project.

Pattern Format

Light Trails is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, designed by Suvi Simola. The pattern includes images, text, and illustrations to support knitters through each stage of construction, making it suitable for advanced knitters who are comfortable with top-down seamless construction, cable work, and pattern interpretation.
