What Is Being Made

Light and Shadow is a textured tam hat designed by Tin Can Knits, featuring an interlocking cable pattern that creates visual contrast between raised and recessed stitches. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in five sizes: baby, toddler, child, adult small, and adult large, with finished head circumferences ranging from 16 to 23 inches. The tam silhouette is a classic, rounded hat shape that sits on the crown of the head.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless construction. The pattern begins with a ribbed cuff worked in 1x1 rib (knit one, purl one alternating), which provides stretch and helps the hat sit securely on the head. The main body features delicate cables that form an interlocking pattern, requiring the use of a cable needle to cross stitches and create the dimensional texture. Gauge is critical to this project, with the cable pattern requiring 22 stitches and 26 rounds per 4 inches.

Stitches Used

Materials Required

The pattern samples shown were worked in SweetGeorgia Trinity Worsted in the colorways 'tumbled stone' and 'birch'.

Needles: US size 5 (3.75mm) and US size 7 (4.5mm) needles. Circular needles measuring 16 to 20 inches in both sizes are required for working the body in the round, with double-pointed needles in the larger size needed for the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for the circular needle.
