Levantine Sweater in Berroco Seaspun – Pattern Summary

The Levantine Sweater is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Alison Green and published by Berroco. Available as a downloadable PDF, this pattern produces a relaxed, generously sized pullover sweater with a distinctive textural surface created through a combination of cabling and a dropped-stitch pattern technique. The design is offered in a wide range of sizes, making it accessible to a broad spectrum of knitters.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a pullover sweater with a comfortable, oversized silhouette. Finished bust measurements range from 36 to 72 inches (91.5 to 183 cm) across nine sizes, and the garment length ranges from approximately 18 to 22½ inches (45.5 to 57 cm). The pattern recommends approximately 4–8 inches (10–20.5 cm) of positive ease, meaning the sweater is intended to fit loosely and comfortably over the body. The sample shown in the pattern photography is knit in size 48 inches / 122 cm.

Construction Method

The Levantine is constructed using a somewhat unconventional and interesting approach. The front and back panels are worked separately as flat pieces. Stitches are then picked up and knit along the sides of these panels, and the body is subsequently worked in the round to the side edges. At that point, the body stitches are cast off, creating the finished garment. This method of construction gives the sweater its unique structure and is part of what makes this an intermediate-level project — knitters should be comfortable transitioning between flat and circular knitting and working pick-up rows with confidence.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting for the front and back panels
  • Circular knitting in the round for the body after stitches are picked up
  • Picking up and knitting stitches along panel edges
  • Cable knitting, requiring the use of a cable needle
  • Dropped stitch technique, used as part of the signature Pattern Stitch to create an open, textural effect
  • Stitch marker placement, including a distinct marker for the beginning of round (BOR)
  • Blocking, which is essential to achieving the correct gauge and finished dimensions, particularly for the dropped-stitch pattern

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st) – the primary background stitch used throughout the panels and body
  • Garter stitch – incorporated into the signature Pattern Stitch, then deliberately dropped as part of the textural design
  • Pattern Stitch – the signature stitch of this design, worked over repeats of 5 stitches each, with 2 repeats measuring approximately 2¼ inches / 7 cm wide after the Garter stitches are dropped. This creates the open, ladder-like or lace-adjacent texture that defines the visual character of the Levantine
  • Cable stitch – worked with a cable needle to add structural and decorative interest

Materials – Yarn

The pattern calls for Berroco Seaspun, a worsted weight yarn sold in 50-gram balls. The colorway used in the sample is #10321 Gulf. Depending on the size being knit, the pattern requires between 10 and 17 balls of Berroco Seaspun. Berroco Seaspun is a textured, yarn with coastal-inspired character, well suited to the relaxed, tactile aesthetic of this design. As with all Berroco patterns, knitters are encouraged to use the specified yarn to ensure accurate results.
