Product Description
Leryne is a big, slightly asymmetriclal, triangular shawl, knit entirely in garter stitch. It has a wavy play of colors, created using short rows.
You start with the long side of the shawl and work decreases as you proceed.
The pattern is long, but it easy, too. You’ll soon understand how everything works and you’ll be able to work variations, if you like to, like adding a third color or working more or less rows in certain colors. If you want a shawl that’s a little bit shorter you can decide to work more decreases in the last third of rows. You don’t have to worry about making mistakes – this pattern is not strict. You can follow the instructions step by step, but at the same time it gives you the freedom to bring in your own preferences.
The sample shown was knit in Zitron Filigran. A substitute yarn is shown below.
Leryne Triangular Shawl by Melanie Berg
What Is Being Made
Leryne is a large, slightly asymmetrical triangular shawl designed by Melanie Berg. This knitted accessory features a distinctive wavy play of colors created through strategic short-row techniques, making it a visually dynamic piece suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a project with both structure and creative flexibility.
Construction and Design Approach
The shawl is worked entirely in garter stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. Work begins at the long side of the shawl and progresses toward the triangular tip through a series of decreases. This top-down construction method allows knitters to customize the finished length by adjusting the number of decreases worked in the final third of the pattern.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
- Garter Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the entire pattern, created by knitting every row
- Purl Stitches: The first stitch of every row is purled, while all remaining stitches are knitted
- Decreases: Worked exclusively on wrong-side rows as you progress toward the shawl tip, creating the triangular shaping
- Short Rows: Used to create the characteristic wavy color play and dimensional texture
- Color Changes: Introduced on right-side rows to build the multi-color effect
Pattern Flexibility and Skill Level
Although the pattern is lengthy, it is designed to be accessible for intermediate knitters. The straightforward garter stitch base makes the pattern easy to work once you understand the rhythm. The design intentionally avoids strict requirements, allowing knitters to make modifications such as adding a third color, adjusting the number of rows worked in specific colors, or creating a shorter finished length by increasing decreases in the final third of rows. This forgiving approach means mistakes need not derail your progress, and you can bring your own creative preferences into the finished piece.
