Product Description

Every four years February has an extra day, and children born on this day are called “Leaplings”. In celebration of an extra day this February, I cast on this sweet crescent shawl. Knit up in meditative and squishy garter rows and broken up with ribbons of lace, this shawl is the perfect pattern with any outfit you might wear this spring.

This shawl was originally an inspiration by my mom, and I’m honored to be able to share this beautiful pattern with you.

Leapling Crescent Shawl by Linette Grayum

What Is Being Made

Leapling is a downloadable knitting pattern for a crescent-shaped shawl designed by independent designer Linette Grayum. This intermediate-level shawl celebrates the concept of "Leaplings"—children born on February 29th during leap years. The pattern honors the designer's mother as inspiration and offers three size options to suit different preferences and yarn quantities.

Shawl Sizing and Dimensions

The pattern is written for three distinct size options. The large sample size measures 74 inches (188 centimeters) long by 18 inches (46 centimeters) deep, making it a substantial crescent shawl suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory.

Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work

Leapling combines meditative garter stitch rows with decorative lace sections. The garter stitch creates a squishy, textured fabric that forms the foundation of the shawl, while ribbons of lace break up the solid knit sections and add visual interest. This interplay between simple garter rows and delicate lace work makes the pattern engaging for intermediate knitters seeking a balance of straightforward and more intricate stitch work.

Yarn and Materials

The shawl is designed to be knit in fingering weight yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size:

  • Small size: 840 yards (768 meters) of fingering weight yarn
  • Large size: 1,260 yards (1,152 meters) of fingering weight yarn
  • Lace sections: 80 yards (805 meters) of lace weight yarn

The sample shown was knit using Malabrigo Mechita, a 100% superwash merino yarn available in 420-yard (385-meter) hanks. The sample used three hanks in the colorway "880/Hojas." Superwash merino provides softness, breathability, and easy care—ideal for a shawl that will be worn frequently and may require washing.

Needles and Tools

Knitters will need circular needles in US size 4 (3.5mm). The needle length depends on the size being made: a 60-inch (153-centimeter) circular needle is recommended for the large size, while a 40-inch (102-centimeter) circular needle suits smaller sizes. Circular needles allow for comfortable knitting of the shawl's width and accommodate the increasing stitch count as the crescent expands.

Skill Level and Craft

Classified as an intermediate knitting project, Leapling is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace stitch patterns. The combination of garter stitch and lace work provides an accessible introduction to lace knitting without overwhelming complexity, making it an excellent choice for advancing one's knitting abilities.
