Laura Knit Balaclava for DK Yarn

What Is Being Made

The Laura is a rounded balaclava designed by Agnese Iskrova of My Cherry Blossom Knits. This head-covering garment combines a knitted hat portion with a neck section, providing warmth and coverage for the face and neck area. The balaclava design features a stretchy construction that accommodates various head sizes, with the 5+ adult size stretching to fit most adult heads up to 60cm (23.5 inches) in circumference. Multiple sizing options are available, including options for children ages 2-5 years and smaller sizes, making this a versatile pattern for different age groups and head measurements.

Techniques Used

The Laura balaclava employs a combination of flat and circular knitting techniques. The hat portion is knit flat, while the neck section transitions to knitting in the round. This mixed-method approach allows for efficient construction and shaping. Knitters have the flexibility to use either double-pointed needles or a circular needle with the magic loop method for the in-the-round sections, accommodating different knitting preferences and available tools.

Stitches and Construction

The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary stitch throughout the design. The gauge is set at 21 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, making accurate gauge swatching essential for proper fit. The pattern includes standard abbreviations for knitting instructions, such as slip stitches, and requires the use of at least one stitch marker to track pattern repeats and shaping during construction.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Laura balaclava is designed for DK weight yarn, also referred to as light worsted weight. Yarn quantities vary by size: the 5+ adult size requires up to 130 grams of yarn, the 2-5 year children's size needs up to 110 grams, and smaller sizes require less than 100 grams. The pattern samples were created using high-quality yarns including Malabrigo Rios, Drops Sky, Drops Lima, and Drops Cotton Merino, providing reference examples of suitable fiber choices.

Tools and Notions Required

  • 4mm / US 6 knitting needles to achieve the specified gauge
  • Double-pointed needles or a circular needle for knitting the neck portion in the round (magic loop method is an alternative)
  • One stitch marker for tracking stitches and pattern sections
  • Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in both flat and circular knitting techniques. The combination of stockinette stitch construction with transitions between flat and in-the-round sections requires comfort with basic shaping and method changes, making it an appropriate challenge for knitters looking to expand their technical abilities.
