Land of the Silver Birch Cardigan by Corrine Walcher

Garment Overview

Land of the Silver Birch is a round-necked, saddle-shoulder cardigan designed for seamless construction. This intermediate-level knitting project features a sophisticated design philosophy that prioritizes yarn beauty through minimalist styling. The cardigan is worked from the top down with no seaming required, making it an excellent choice for knitters seeking a polished, professional finish.

Construction Technique

This cardigan employs a saddle-shoulder construction method, a classic technique that creates elegant shoulder shaping without traditional seaming. Sleeves are picked up directly from the saddle shoulders and knit downward to the cuffs, eliminating the need for joining body and sleeve pieces. This seamless approach creates clean lines and reduces finishing work, while the saddle shoulders provide a refined silhouette and improved fit.

Design Details and Stitch Work

The design incorporates subtle lace patterning on the sleeves and along seam lines, adding visual interest while maintaining the cardigan's understated elegance. The lace elements are strategically placed to enhance the garment's structure without overwhelming the luxurious qualities of the yarn. The simple, refined aesthetic allows the premium fiber content to take center stage.

  • Chest circumference: 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, or 52 inches
  • Sleeve circumference: 13, 13.5, 14, 14.5, 15, or 15.5 inches

Yarn Specifications

Land of the Silver Birch is designed for DK weight yarn. The pattern calls for Flying Goat Farm Alto, a premium blend composed of 55% Superwash Bluefaced Leicester wool and 45% silk. This yarn provides 260 yards per 4-ounce skein. Yardage requirements range from 4 skeins for the smallest size to 7 skeins for the largest size. The sample cardigan shown was knit in the Lightning colorway, showcasing how the BFL and silk blend creates a lustrous, sophisticated appearance.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires US #6/4.00mm circular needles in a 32-inch length or longer, depending on the size being worked. Knitters working the larger sizes may benefit from using a longer circular needle to accommodate the increased stitch count. Additionally, a set of US #6/4.00mm double-pointed needles or the knitter's preferred method for small circumference knitting is needed for working the sleeves and other narrow sections.

Skill Level

This cardigan is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with seamless construction techniques, picking up stitches, and working lace patterns before beginning this project. The saddle-shoulder method and lace details require attention to shaping and stitch accuracy, making this an ideal project for knitters with solid fundamental skills seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
