Product Description

Lake Breeze is a totally seamless raglan cardigan knit from the top-down in one piece, somewhat inspired by Persistence. The cables on the back give it a little more style than a plain stockinette cardigan would - but not too much, making this a great cardi for advanced beginners, who would like to get a little adventurous with their knitting. This is truly a “one-piece wonder”, aside from the underarm stitches, there is absolutely no seaming and no picking up stitches required! There is also an option to knit Lake Breeze as a pullover.

Gauge -18 stitches x 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on size US 8 (5.0 mm) needles - or size needed to get required gauge on a washed and blocked swatch.

Lake Breeze Cardigan by The Public Knitter

Project Overview

Lake Breeze is a seamless raglan cardigan designed by The Public Knitter and published in 2019. This intermediate-level knitting project features a top-down construction method that eliminates the need for seaming or picking up stitches, making it an ideal choice for advanced beginners looking to expand their knitting skills. The pattern also offers the flexibility to knit Lake Breeze as a pullover, providing versatility for different garment preferences.

Design Features

The cardigan showcases cable details on the back panel that add visual interest and texture without overwhelming the overall aesthetic. This balanced approach makes Lake Breeze more sophisticated than a basic stockinette cardigan while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The design is inspired by the principle of continuous progress in knitting, making it suitable for crafters who want to challenge themselves with cable work while maintaining a relatively straightforward construction process.

Construction Method

Lake Breeze employs a seamless, top-down raglan construction technique. This method allows knitters to work the entire garment as one continuous piece from the neckline downward, with minimal finishing required. The only exception involves the underarm stitches, which are the sole area requiring attention after the main knitting is complete. This construction approach eliminates traditional seaming and the need to pick up stitches along edges, significantly reducing finishing time and complexity.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

  • Raglan shaping: Increases are worked at regular intervals to create the characteristic raglan sleeve cap
  • Cable stitches: Featured on the back panel to provide texture and visual depth
  • Stockinette stitch: Forms the primary fabric base of the cardigan
  • Top-down construction: Allows for seamless knitting from neck to hem

Materials

Lake Breeze is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, a versatile yarn weight that provides good stitch definition for both stockinette and cable work. The pattern requires circular needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn, which are essential for the seamless, top-down raglan construction method used throughout this project.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, Lake Breeze is well-suited for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to incorporate cable work into their projects. The straightforward construction and minimal finishing make it an encouraging project for those seeking to build confidence with more advanced stitch patterns without the added complexity of traditional garment assembly.
