Ladies Bulky Knit Slipper by Monique Rae Designs

Project Overview

The Ladies Bulky Knit Slipper is a one-piece knit design created by Monique Rae Designs that requires no sewing. These slippers feature a medium ride back and sides, designed to cover the top of the foot midway. The pattern accommodates multiple size ranges from 5/6 through 10/11, with adjustable sole sizing options to fit average, narrow, and wide feet. Left and right slippers are knit identically using a color code system.

Craft and Technique

This project uses the knitting craft exclusively. The one-piece construction method eliminates the need for sewing, making assembly straightforward. The pattern employs a systematic approach using row counters to track progress through different size variations, with clear row-by-row instructions beginning at Row 26 and continuing through the sole shaping.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Knit stitch (k) – the primary stitch throughout the pattern
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease technique used for shaping the slipper, appearing in rows such as Row 26 (k8 k2tog k7) and Row 30 (k7 k2tog k7) to gradually reduce stitch counts
  • Color code system – incorporated into the design for visual pattern guidance

Materials and Yarn

This pattern calls for Lion Brand Homespun yarn in bulky weight (yarn weight 5). Approximate yarn usage varies by size: 2.0 ounces/60 yards for the smallest size (5/6) up to 2.5 ounces/75 yards for the largest size (10/11). Actual yardage requirements may vary depending on sole size selection, specific yarn used, and individual knitting tension.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires either a 24-inch circular needle or five double-pointed needles in US size 7 (4.5mm), which corresponds to UK and Canadian size 7. A row counter is recommended to track progress through the multiple size variations, though the pattern provides alternative instructions for those not using a counter.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with decreases and managing multiple size options within a single pattern.
