Product Description
This infinity scarf and matching hat is knit in Loops and Threads Joy Dk yarn. This yarn is so soft and luxurious feeling that you will be both warm and comfortable on the cool days yet ahead of us. I used two full balls of Joy Dk for the scarf which is knit horizontally and then joined with kitchener stitch. I used about 3/4 of a ball for the matching toque with a pompom. This hat fits an average adult but I knit the ribbing tightly so the measurements for the ribbing is 16" but the hat fits an average adult female (22-23") The pattern that is incorporated throughout both items is the Lacy Shells design. Easy and yet very attractive and different. Full instructions are given for both items. Great for winter/spring to keep you fashionable and warm at the same time. xo wendy
Lacy Shells Hat and Scarf by Tat'sgran's Treasures
Project Overview
This original knitting pattern from designer Wendy Siladji of Tat'sgran's Treasures features a coordinating set comprising an infinity scarf and matching hat. Both pieces showcase delicate lacy shell stitch work, making this an elegant accessory collection suitable for knitters seeking beginner-friendly projects with sophisticated visual appeal.
What Is Being Made
The Lacy Shells collection includes two complementary garments:
- Infinity Scarf: A continuous loop design measuring 200 cm (80 inches) in length and 19 cm (7.5 inches) in width, providing generous drape and versatility for various styling options
- Matching Hat: A fitted hat measuring 26 cm (10 inches) in length with a cast-on edge of 41 cm (16 inches) in width at the ribbing, designed to coordinate seamlessly with the scarf
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The design features lacy shell stitch work, which creates an openwork, decorative texture characteristic of shell motifs in knitting. The hat construction incorporates ribbing at the cast-on edge, a classic technique that provides elasticity and a finished appearance. Stitch markers are utilized throughout the project to help track pattern repeats and maintain stitch accuracy, particularly important when working with lacy stitch patterns that require careful attention to increases and decreases.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed using DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn category ideal for creating delicate, detailed stitch definition. The original design was created with Loops and Threads "Joy" DK yarn in the Spearmint colorway. Yarn requirements are as follows:
- Infinity Scarf: 2 full balls of DK yarn (250 meters or 273 yards per ball for solid colors; variegated colorways contain less yardage per ball), totaling approximately 500 meters
- Hat and Pompom: Approximately ¾ ball of matching DK yarn (approximately 180 meters)
- Knitting Needles: 3.75 mm needles, appropriately sized for DK weight yarn to achieve proper gauge
- Gauge: 22 stitches and 28 rows over a 4x4 inch (10x10 cm) swatch in stockinette stitch
- Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
Pattern Characteristics
Classified as a beginner difficulty level project, the Lacy Shells pattern makes lace knitting accessible to newer crafters. The downloadable PDF format allows immediate access to complete instructions. The coordinating nature of the infinity scarf and hat creates a cohesive accessory set, with both pieces utilizing the same yarn weight and stitch techniques for visual harmony. The use of a single colorway throughout both garments ensures a unified, polished finished appearance.
