Product Description
Make your own snowflake themed ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree or give as gifts. These may look complex but they come together quickly and easily. Also, unlike a lot of other snowflake ornament patterns, this one doesn’t need any starching to keep its shape - just crochet, weave in your ends and hang them up!
Skill Level: Easy US Terminology
Worked in rounds with very clear instructions that include the written pattern, pattern chart and pictures. Ornaments measure about 3.5” finished.
I used Premier Cotton Fair but feel free to use any #2 fine weight yarn you prefer. Feel free to have fun trying out different color combinations that match your own aesthetic. These don’t take much yarn so are a good option to use up leftovers.
I love creating crochet snowflake patterns so I will be adding more soon!
Lacy Border Layered Snowflake Ornament
What is Being Made
This crochet pattern creates a decorative snowflake ornament featuring a lacy border design with layered construction. The finished piece is suitable for holiday decoration and seasonal display. The ornament is designed as a beginner-friendly project, making it accessible to crafters new to crochet techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a crochet project that uses fundamental crochet methods to construct the snowflake shape. The pattern employs circular construction beginning with a magic ring (or alternative chain-and-slip-stitch ring method for those unfamiliar with the magic ring technique). The layered snowflake design is built outward from the center using repeated rounds of stitching to create the characteristic lacy, dimensional appearance.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches appropriate for beginners:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used to create foundation chains and chain spaces throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc) – provides structure and height to the design
- Single crochet (sc) – creates tighter, more defined areas of the lace
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between sections
The pattern also incorporates chain spaces (abbreviated as ch sp), which are the gaps created by chains between stitches that contribute to the lacy, open quality of the snowflake design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This ornament is worked using sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates delicate, detailed stitching ideal for ornamental pieces. The pattern specifies color work, with at least one color identified as "color A" in the instructions, allowing for creative color choices. Appropriate crochet hooks for sport weight yarn are required, though the specific hook size should be referenced in the complete pattern documentation.
Pattern Structure and Difficulty
Designed as a beginner-level project, this pattern is accessible to those with basic crochet knowledge. The instructions use standard US crochet terminology and include helpful abbreviations and symbols. Square brackets indicate sections that should be repeated, making the pattern easy to follow. The circular construction method and layered approach create visual interest while remaining manageable for newer crocheters.
