Product Description

Labyrinth Lullaby is a traveling stitch lattice design that can be worked either in the original tapered design or in the alternative version (which simply carries the stitch pattern all the way down to the point that you would begin your toe section). Although it looks busy this pattern is intuitive and you will soon be lulled into a sweet, sweet knitting rhythm.

Available in unisex sizing XS/48 stitch count, S/60 stitch count, M/72 stitch count, L/84 stitch count, and XL/ 96 stitch count. You'll need anywhere from 360 to 460 yards depending upon your size and which instep you work - the alternative has more lattice work and will use more yarn than the tapered version. For instance, I used 425 yards when I worked the tapered version in the extra-large size for a friend (for a ladies size 12 - fit my husband's size 11 feet), but I would need approximately 440 yards for the alternative version. I used about 360 yards for the large stitch count when I knit the pair for my sister-in-l

Labyrinth Lullaby Socks by Susan Woodley

Project Overview

Labyrinth Lullaby is an advanced knitting pattern for socks featuring a sophisticated traveling stitch lattice design. Created by designer Susan Woodley, this downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters an intricate yet intuitive project that combines visual complexity with a meditative knitting experience. The pattern includes two distinct construction options: the original tapered design and an alternative version that extends the lattice stitch pattern throughout the leg and instep sections.

Design Features and Variations

The defining characteristic of Labyrinth Lullaby is its traveling stitch lattice, a technique that creates an intricate geometric pattern reminiscent of a labyrinth. Despite the busy appearance of the finished design, the pattern is structured to become intuitive after the initial learning curve, allowing knitters to enter a rhythmic flow state during construction. The pattern accommodates different aesthetic preferences through two versions:

  • Tapered Design: The original version features a tapered leg that gradually transitions into the foot section
  • Alternative Version: An extended option that carries the full lattice stitch pattern down through the instep, creating a more elaborate overall design with increased stitch complexity

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced-level pattern employs traveling stitches as its primary technical element. Traveling stitches involve the deliberate movement of stitches across rows to create diagonal lines and lattice formations, requiring careful attention to stitch placement and manipulation. The technique demands intermediate to advanced knitting skills, including proficiency with increases, decreases, and stitch transfers. Knitters must maintain consistent tension and understand how individual stitch movements contribute to the overall pattern architecture.

Yarn and Materials Requirements

Labyrinth Lullaby is designed for fingering weight yarn, the standard choice for sock knitting due to its durability and appropriate thickness for foot wear. Yardage requirements vary based on sock size and design choice:

  • Tapered version: Approximately 360 to 425 yards depending on size
  • Alternative version: Approximately 440 yards or more due to extended lattice work
  • Example: The tapered design in extra-large size requires approximately 425 yards; the large stitch count version requires approximately 360 yards

The pattern accommodates multiple sizes, allowing customization for different foot dimensions and preferences. Knitters will need appropriate sock needles suitable for fingering weight yarn, typically in sizes appropriate for the specific yarn weight being used.

Skill Level and Knitting Experience

Classified as an advanced knitting project, Labyrinth Lullaby is best suited for experienced knitters who have completed multiple sock projects and are comfortable with complex stitch patterns. The traveling lattice technique requires sustained concentration and pattern reading ability, though the intuitive nature of the design means that once the rhythm is established, the work becomes increasingly meditative and enjoyable.
