Product Description

Note: this pattern is also available for free on my website.

Created to celebrate new babies!

This koala lovey is made in two main parts, using standard amigurumi methods to create the head, and then a fun double stranded technique to create the lovey blanket called Yarn Under crochet.

To make the lovey you'll need 2 balls of light grey yarn for the head and for the main colour of the lovey blanket, and a single ball of the complementary colour for the blanket.

This pattern has been designed with Scheepjes Cahlista, an aran weight, 100% soft cotton yarn, ideally suited to baby projects and to amigurumis.

You'll also need some scrap in black to make the nose and a small handful of toy filling, but you can also use something else that you might have at home, like yarn ends, if you don't have toy filling.

Koala Lovey Crochet Toy

What You'll Make

The Koala Lovey is a beginner-friendly amigurumi-style stuffed toy designed by MissNeriss. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a soft, cuddly koala companion perfect for babies and young children. The project includes a coordinating mini-blanket, making it an ideal gift set. The lovey combines the main koala body with contrast color details and a cozy blanket accessory.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners, with clear instruction in standard abbreviations and stitch construction. The design uses the magic ring method to begin amigurumi pieces, creating seamless, tight circles ideal for toy construction. Increases and decreases are strategically placed throughout to shape the koala's head, body, and limbs, while the mini-blanket incorporates a border worked in a separate step for a finished appearance.

Stitches Included

  • Chain (Ch) – foundation stitch for the mini-blanket and borders
  • Slip stitch (Ss) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Double crochet (Dc) – primary stitch for the toy body and blanket fabric
  • Double crochet increase (DcInc) – increases 2 stitches in 1 stitch for shaping curves
  • Double crochet decrease (Dec) – decreases stitches over 2 stitches to taper shapes
  • Half treble crochet increase (HtrInc) – increases 2 stitches in 1 stitch for varied texture
  • Treble crochet (Tr) – creates lighter, airier sections
  • Yarn under double crochet (YUdc) – specialty stitch variation for textural detail

Materials Required

This pattern calls for Scheepjes Cahlista, a 100% cotton yarn in aran weight. Each ball contains 50 grams and approximately 85 meters of yardage. You will need 2 balls of the main color (MC) – the pattern specifies Scheepjes Cahlista in 074 Mercury for the koala body. One ball of contrast color (CC) is required for details; the designer used 385 Chrystalline and 256 Cornelia Rose in the samples provided. A small amount of scrap black yarn (preferably matching Scheepjes Cahlista) is needed for facial features like eyes and nose.

Tools and Accessories

  • 4mm crochet hook – used for amigurumi parts (koala body and head)
  • 6mm crochet hook – used for the mini-blanket main fabric
  • 5mm crochet hook – used for the mini-blanket border
  • Toy filling – for stuffing the koala head and body to create dimension and softness
  • Stitch markers – to track rounds and pattern repeats

Pattern Notes

The pattern uses UK crochet terminology, so crocheters should ensure they are familiar with UK stitch definitions, which differ from US terminology. For example, UK double crochet is equivalent to US single crochet. The use of aran weight cotton yarn creates a sturdy, washable toy suitable for babies and toddlers. The pattern includes options for stuffing flexibility – you can use commercial toy filling or substitute scrap yarn for a slightly softer, less firm result. The mini-blanket is worked in two stages: the main body using a 6mm hook for drape, followed by a border worked with a 5mm hook for definition and structure.
