What Is Being Made

Knudedybet is a crescent-shaped shawl named after a gutter in the sea off the island of Fanoe. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant, one-piece shawl worked flat back and forth from the top down. The design is offered in three finished sizes to suit different preferences and yarn quantities.

Finished Measurements

  • Small: Width 135 centimeters, Height 40 centimeters
  • Medium: Width 160 centimeters, Height 52 centimeters
  • Large: Width 185 centimeters, Height 64 centimeters

All measurements are taken after blocking.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced-level shawl pattern employs chart-based knitting instructions, requiring knitters to read and follow stitch diagrams. The pattern is worked in a top-down construction method, a popular technique for shawls that allows for flexible sizing and strategic yarn distribution. The crescent shape is achieved through shaping techniques integrated throughout the pattern.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Knudedybet is designed for sport-weight yarn with a recommended yardage of approximately 300 meters per 100 grams. Suitable yarn options include Malabrigo Arroyo or Lang Yarns Merino 150. The pattern calls for wool or wool-blend yarns, with the medium shawl pictured in 100% Merino wool from Chester Wool Company sport 300.

Yarn quantities by size:

  • Small: 225–275 grams
  • Medium: 400–450 grams
  • Large: 600–650 grams

Needles and Notions

One 4 mm circular needle measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) or longer is required for working this shawl comfortably. Achieving the correct gauge according to the pattern chart is essential, as every knitter's gauge is unique. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and rust-proof pins for blocking the finished shawl to its final measurements.
