Product Description

Linnypin Designs - Knitted Square Father Christmas

Make your very own Father Christmas as a gift for someone special or for you to keep as a decoration at Christmas time.

He has been designed using the clever manipulation of garter stitch squares. Santa also has a shaped hat and sack in garter stitch. His beard gives him his character (be creative!)

There are full working instructions and pictures to help you with the assembly of your Father Christmas.

When sitting proudly your Father Christmas is approximately 26 cm tall.

We hope you have as much fun making your Father Christmas as we did designing him! (watch out for his helpers, Elf, Reindeer & Snowman)

A very merry Christmas from us here at Linnypin Designs UK.

Knitted Square Santa by Linda Morris Tomlin

What is Being Made

This is a Father Christmas toy designed as a knitted square project by Linnypin Designs UK. The finished piece features a character design suitable for display or play, combining knitted fabric components with embellishments to create a complete Santa figure.

Project Type and Craft

This is a knitting project classified as a beginner-level toy design. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF with detailed, easy-to-follow instructions written to ensure an enjoyable making experience. The designer, Linda Morris Tomlin from Linnypin Designs UK, provides support for crafters who have questions during the construction process.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Garter stitch — the primary stitch structure, created by knitting every row to produce a textured, reversible fabric
  • Color work — the pattern incorporates multiple colors (Red and White are referenced in the instructions) to build the Santa design
  • Color changes with twisted yarns — a specific technique used to twist stitches around each other when changing colors, which prevents holes from forming in the fabric
  • Tension square knitting — a calibration swatch worked first to ensure proper gauge before beginning the main project

Stitches and Construction

The pattern uses basic knit stitches throughout. The tension square is worked over 14 stitches and 22 rows to measure a 6cm square on 3.75mm needles, establishing the gauge for the project. The back head component is created by casting on 14 stitches and working in garter stitch with color changes introduced from the second row onward. Instructions include guidance on adjusting needle size if the tension square measures larger or smaller than the target 6cm square, ensuring proper finished dimensions.

Materials Required

  • Yarn — DK weight yarn in Red and White (and potentially additional colors for the complete design)
  • Knitting needles — 3.75mm needles for working the tension square and main components
  • Safety eyes — for creating the Santa's facial features
  • Sewing needle and thread — for assembling the knitted pieces and attaching embellishments
  • Felt — additional material for details and finishing touches

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as beginner level, making it suitable for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward toy-making project. The use of garter stitch, a fundamental knitting technique, combined with clear instructions and designer support, ensures accessibility for crafters at the start of their knitting journey.
