Knitted Bruno the Bear Toy in Stylecraft Special DK – Pattern 9670

This downloadable PDF pattern from Stylecraft guides knitters through creating Bruno the Bear, an adorable knitted toy bear standing approximately 32cm (12½ inches) tall. The pattern is rated advanced beginner, making it an excellent project for those who have mastered basic knitting and are ready to explore shaping, colour work, and simple construction techniques. Bruno also comes with a wardrobe of three charming outfits — a T-shirt, dungarees, and a jacket — each knitted separately to fit the finished bear.

About the Bear

Bruno himself is knitted in Stylecraft Special DK yarn, using two colours worked together with the intarsia method to create the bear's distinctive two-tone appearance. The body and head are worked as a single piece beginning with a cast-on of 15 stitches, then expanded through a series of kfb (knit front and back) increase rows to build the rounded, stuffed form. The bear's finished shape is achieved through careful increases and decreases worked in stocking stitch (stockinette), with the body sections seamed and filled with polyester toy stuffing to give Bruno his soft, three-dimensional form.

Bear Materials

  • Stylecraft Special DK – 1 x 100g ball in Mocha 1064
  • Stylecraft Special DK – 1 x 100g ball in Stone 1710
  • A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) knitting needles
  • A pair of 4mm (UK 8 / US 6) knitting needles
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • Small amount of black embroidery thread for the face details
  • Stitch markers, stitch holder, and a blunt tapestry needle

Bear Techniques and Stitches

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette) – the primary fabric stitch throughout
  • Kfb increases – used extensively to shape the body and head
  • Intarsia colour work – separate strands of yarn are used for each colour section, with yarns crossed at the back to prevent holes
  • Seaming and stuffing – completed sections are sewn together and filled to create the three-dimensional toy
  • Embroidery – black thread is used to embroider Bruno's facial features

Bruno's Wardrobe

The pattern includes instructions for three separate garments sized to fit the finished bear. Each clothing piece uses less than a full ball of yarn, and the pattern notes that oddments of any DK weight yarn can be substituted. Two specific yarn ranges are offered as options for the clothes: Stylecraft Belissima DK and Stylecraft Batik DK, with suggested colourways for each garment.

T-Shirt and Hankie

The T-shirt measures approximately 8cm (3 inches) long and is a quick, satisfying knit. It is fastened with a single button. Suggested yarn options include approximately 20g of Belissima DK in Single Cream 3921 or approximately 20g of Batik DK in Silver 1917.

Dungarees

The dungarees measure approximately 15cm (6 inches) long, making them the longest garment in Bruno's wardrobe. Suggested yarn options include approximately 30g of Belissima DK in Double Denim 3931 or approximately 30g of Batik DK in Sage 1908.

Jacket

The jacket measures approximately 10cm (4 inches) long and is fastened with two buttons. Suggested yarn options include approximately 30g of Belissima DK in Rio Red 3932 or approximately
