Knitkinz Dog for Your Office
What Is Being Made
The Knitkinz Dog for Your Office is a 6-inch tall knitted toy designed by knitvana to serve as a charming desk companion. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a functional decorative piece that can hold pens or business cards while adding personality to a workspace. The dog features a unified body and head construction, making it an accessible yet engaging project for knitters with some experience.
Design and Construction
This knitted dog is engineered as a single-piece construction, beginning with the body and seamlessly incorporating the head. The design uses strategic increases and decreases to create the three-dimensional form, allowing the toy to sit upright on a desk or shelf. The unified body-head approach simplifies assembly while maintaining structural integrity.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Cast-on and foundation: The project begins with a cast-on of 6 stitches using a single thread and size #3 needles, establishing the base for the entire piece
- Increases: Make One (M1) increases are used strategically throughout the early rows to expand the stitch count from 6 to 11 stitches (Row 2), then to 21 stitches (Row 4), and finally to 30 stitches (Row 6), creating the body's width
- Decreases: Purl two together (P2tog) decreases are employed in later rows to shape and taper the form, reducing from 30 stitches back down to 21 stitches and then to 11 stitches for finishing
- Garter and reverse stockinette stitch: Alternating knit rows (odd rows) with purl rows creates textural variation; sustained purl rows (Rows 10-18 and Row 22) build the main body section
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch: Used on all odd-numbered rows and Row 8 to create structure and definition
- Purl stitch: Employed extensively throughout, particularly in Rows 2, 4, 6, 20, 22, and 24, as well as the sustained purl section in Rows 10-18
- Make One (M1): An increase stitch used in Rows 2, 4, and 6 to expand the piece and establish the body's rounded form
- Purl two together (P2tog): A decrease stitch used in Rows 20 and 24 to shape and narrow the piece
Materials
The Knitkinz Dog accommodates flexible yarn choices, allowing crafters to use any yarn weight or fiber that suits their preference. The original design sample was created using grey and white cotton yarns for the main body, with red cotton yarn for the tongue detail and white fun fur yarn for the ears, providing textural contrast and visual interest. Knitters will need size #3 needles to achieve the proper gauge and construction as outlined in the pattern.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with shaping techniques. The combination of increases, decreases, and stitch variations provides skill-building opportunities while remaining achievable for experienced beginners.
