Product Description
Most flat knit fingerless mittens don't have thumbs and may have a seam. The difference with my pattern is that you knit the thumb as part of the mittens and you don't have to mattress stitch a seam, they are seamless.
This pattern is (hopefully) an easy to follow, step by step, recipe for knitting fingerless gloves on 2 needles, so flat, using the following techniques:
Provisional cast on
Short row shaping
Wrap and turn
Kitchener stitch
And you will be knitting them to fit your own hands, or the hands of family etc, so not just for adults, with the length of cuff you want. To do this you will work to your own gauge with the yarn you want to use. Follow these guidelines and this should result in a pair of fingerless mittens that fit you nicely.
Knit-to-Fit Seamless Fingerless Mittens by Kippers Ning
What is Being Made
This pattern provides instructions for creating a pair of seamless fingerless mittens using a knit-flat construction method. The design features a customizable fit achieved through short row shaping, making these mittens suitable for any hand size. The fingerless style allows for dexterity while keeping hands warm, making them practical for everyday wear or as a functional accessory.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern introduces several essential knitting techniques that are explained in detail for those with no prior experience. The techniques employed include:
- Provisional Cast On: A temporary cast-on method that allows stitches to be picked up later, essential for seamless construction
- Short Row Shaping: A technique used to add depth and contour to the mittens, allowing them to mold to the hand's natural shape
- Wrap and Turn: A method used in conjunction with short rows to prevent gaps and create smooth transitions in the fabric
- Kitchener Stitch: Also known as grafting, this technique creates an invisible seam by weaving live stitches together, contributing to the seamless finish
Stitches and Construction
The pattern uses fundamental knit and purl stitches as the foundation for the mittens. The abbreviations referenced include K for knit and P for purl, indicating a basic stockinette or similar stitch structure. The mittens are knitted flat rather than in the round, which simplifies the construction process for beginners while still achieving a professional, seamless appearance through the grafting technique.
Materials Required
This pattern is designed to work with double knit (DK) weight yarn, requiring approximately 50 grams of yarn. The pattern is flexible and can accommodate different yarn weights for experienced knitters using the same calculation methods. Essential tools include:
- 4mm knitting needles for the main fabric
- 4mm double-pointed needle (DPN) for grafting
- 4mm or larger crochet hook for the provisional cast on
- Scrap yarn in a contrasting color for the provisional cast on
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern sections
- Safety pin for holding stitches
- Darning needle for weaving in ends
- Tape measure, paper, and pencil for taking measurements and calculating gauge
Pattern Approach and Customization
The Knit-to-Fit approach emphasizes customization through measurement and gauge calculation. Before beginning, knitters must take specific hand measurements and work out their personal gauge to ensure the finished mittens fit properly. This methodical approach removes the guesswork from sizing and allows the pattern to work for any hand size, making it an inclusive design suitable for the entire family.
