Kitty Lovey Crochet Pattern by Loops and Love Crochet
Project Overview
The Kitty Lovey is a beginner-friendly crochet project that combines a soft blanket with adorable amigurumi cat pieces attached to create a unique lovey blanket. This hybrid design merges the comfort of a baby blanket with the charm of stuffed amigurumi animals, making it an ideal handmade gift for new babies, baby showers, or special little ones. The project is designed to be approachable for crocheters new to the craft while still delivering a professional, finished result.
What Is Being Made
The Kitty Lovey consists of two main components that work together as a complete project. The first component is a blanket base that serves as the foundation and primary surface of the lovey. The second component features amigurumi cat pieces—three-dimensional crocheted shapes—that are carefully sewn onto the blanket to complete the design. This combination approach allows makers to create a multi-textured, tactile toy that functions as both a blanket and a stuffed companion.
Construction Techniques
The Kitty Lovey employs a two-stage construction method that separates the blanket creation from the amigurumi assembly. First, the crocheter works the blanket section using standard flat crochet techniques. Next, the amigurumi pieces are crocheted in the round to create three-dimensional forms. Once all pieces are complete, the amigurumi components are sewn securely onto the finished blanket using a needle and yarn, creating a unified final product. This modular approach makes the project manageable and allows crafters to complete distinct sections before assembly.
Crochet Stitches and Methods
While the pattern details specific stitches within the instructions, the project utilizes fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The blanket section employs standard crochet stitches worked in rows or rounds, while the amigurumi pieces use in-the-round construction—a core amigurumi technique that creates seamless, dimensional forms. The pattern requires basic crochet knowledge including chain stitches, single crochet, and likely double crochet or similar foundational stitches. Stuffing and sewing techniques are also incorporated to complete the three-dimensional amigurumi elements.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Worsted-weight (#4) yarn in multiple colorways. The pictured sample uses WeCrochet/Knit Picks Heatherly yarn in Snowflake (approximately 100 yards), Sweetheart (approximately 60 yards), Cabana (approximately 10 yards), and Lilac (approximately 10 yards). Any worsted-weight yarn of comparable quality and yardage will work for this project.
- Crochet Hooks: Two different hook sizes are required—a 3.5mm crochet hook for the amigurumi pieces and a 5.5mm crochet hook for the blanket section. Crocheters who work with a looser tension may prefer to use a 5mm hook for the blanket instead of the 5.5mm size.
- Additional Supplies: Fiberfill stuffing for the amigurumi pieces and a yarn needle for sewing components together are necessary to complete the project.
Yarn Weight and Hook Selection
The worsted-weight yarn paired with appropriately sized hooks creates a fabric with good drape and durability suitable for a lovey blanket. The larger 5.5mm hook for the blanket produces a more open, flexible fabric that is soft and comfortable for a baby, while the smaller 3.5mm hook used for amigurumi creates tighter, more structured pieces that hold their shape and stuffing securely. Hook size adjustments based on individual crochet tension ensure consistent results across different makers' skill levels.
Difficulty Level
Designed as a beginner project, the Kitty Lovey is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The straightforward construction method, use of fundamental stitches, and clear separation of blanket and amigurumi components make this pattern approachable without sacrificing the visual appeal of the finished piece. Beginners will gain experience with both flat and in-the-round crochet techniques while creating a meaningful handmade gift.
