Product Description
Like its namesake, Kir Royale is heady and bright – a treat both to knit and wear.
The slipped garter stitch pattern creates a delectable texture in the body, edged by a wide cable that seems to gently fold in on itself.
A generous ribbed trim flares from the bottom.
A beautiful showcase for variegated yarns, Kir Royale is simply divine when knit in an elegant merino/silk blend like Luna from Wollfaktor.
The shawl is worked in different steps. First, the textured body is knit down and out from the center of the top edge. The cable panel is then worked across, putting more and more stitches to rest as you go, and in the end, these are used to add the ribbed edging.
Pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.
Sample is shown in Wollfaktor Luna. A subsitute yarn is suggested below.
Kir Royale Shawl by Melanie Berg
Project Overview
Kir Royale is an elegant knitted shawl designed by Melanie Berg that combines sophisticated stitch work with striking visual appeal. Named after the classic cocktail, this intermediate-level shawl project delivers both aesthetic beauty and an enjoyable knitting experience. The design showcases variegated yarns particularly well, making it an ideal choice for displaying color-rich fiber in a refined accessory.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a finished shawl featuring a generous, wearable silhouette. The design incorporates a main body section, decorative edging, and a flared ribbed trim at the bottom, resulting in a versatile garment that works as both a statement piece and a practical accessory.
Stitch Techniques and Textures
The shawl employs several key stitch techniques to create its distinctive character:
- Slipped Garter Stitch: Forms the primary texture of the shawl body, creating a delectable, visually interesting fabric with subtle depth and movement
- Cable Pattern: A wide cable edge frames the shawl, designed to gently fold in on itself for an elegant, dimensional finish
- Ribbed Trim: A generous ribbed section at the bottom flares outward, adding structure and visual interest to the lower edge
Abbreviations and Stitch Decreases/Increases
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations to guide construction:
- sl 2 sts together knitwise, k1, pass 2 slipped sts over knit st (sk2p): A double decrease that reduces 2 stitches in a single maneuver
- kfb (knit front and back): An increase technique that creates one additional stitch from a single stitch
- k2tog (knit 2 together): A basic decrease that combines two stitches into one
- M1L (Make 1 Left): An increase worked by inserting the left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand between the stitch just worked and the next stitch
- k (knit): The fundamental knit stitch used throughout the pattern
Yarn and Materials
The recommended yarn for this project is Wollfaktor Luna, a luxurious blend of 55% Merino and 45% Silk. This fiber combination provides both warmth and drape, making it ideal for a sophisticated shawl. The yarn is classified as 4-ply/sport weight, offering a balance between stitch definition and fabric fluidity.
- Yardage Required: Approximately 653 yards (598 meters) total, with the sample using 149 grams across 2 skeins
- Fiber Content: 55% Merino Wool, 45% Silk blend
- Weight per Skein: 100 grams per skein
Needles and Equipment
The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes to accommodate different sections of the shawl:
- US 4 [3.5 mm] circular needles: 40 inches (100 cm) long, used for sections requiring a tighter gauge
- US 6 [4.0 mm] circular needles: 40 inches (100 cm) long, used for sections worked at a looser gauge
Circular needles of this length provide the necessary capacity for the shawl's generous dimensions while maintaining control during knitting.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and shaping techniques. The combination of slipped garter stitch, cable work, and various increase and decrease methods requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading pattern instructions.
Design Inspiration
The shawl's name and aesthetic draw inspiration from the Kir Royale cocktail, evoking a sense of elegance, brightness, and celebration. This thematic connection influences both the visual presentation and the knitting experience, making the project feel special and refined from start to finish.
