Kinta Shawlette by Ambah O'Brien

What Is Being Made

Kinta is a light, versatile shawlette designed to showcase beautiful yarn while remaining beginner-friendly. This V-shaped shawlette features tapered ends and is worked from the bottom up, making it an ideal project for displaying a single skein or two of special yarn. The finished piece measures 80 to 90 inches (200 to 225 centimeters) across the bottom edge, with a depth of 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 centimeters) after blocking, depending on size selection.

Techniques and Construction

Kinta is constructed using a bottom-up knitting approach, which allows knitters to easily control the finished size based on available yardage. The pattern features an easy-to-memorize eyelet mesh pattern that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to beginners. This adaptable construction method makes Kinta suitable for a wide range of yarn quantities, with sizes specifically written to accommodate either one or two skeins of fingering weight yarn. The shawlette's tapered ends and V-shaped silhouette are achieved through the strategic placement of decreases and the eyelet pattern work throughout.

Stitches Used

The knitting techniques employed in Kinta include fundamental stitches and decreases essential to shawl construction:

  • Knit (k): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the shawlette
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease that provides balanced shaping
  • Slip 1 stitch purlwise (sl1): Used for edge stitches and pattern transitions
  • Slip marker (sm): Helps track pattern repeats and shaping sections

The eyelet mesh pattern repeats throughout the design, creating an open, lacy fabric that showcases yarn color and texture while remaining straightforward enough for knitters new to shawl construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Kinta is designed for fingering weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates delicate, drapey fabric ideal for shawlettes. The pattern accommodates one or two skeins depending on the size chosen, making it an efficient project for showcasing special yarns. Ambah O'Brien notes that Kinta looks equally beautiful when knit in solid colors, gradient yarns, or hand-dyed skeins. For a summer version, the designer suggests substituting linen, cotton, or hemp yarn in fingering weight, which would create a lighter, more breathable fabric perfect for warm-weather wear. Standard knitting needles appropriate for fingering weight yarn are required, though specific needle size recommendations would be found in the complete pattern.

Design Versatility

One of Kinta's key strengths is its adaptability. The easy-to-memorize eyelet mesh pattern can be readily adjusted to make the most of your available yardage, allowing knitters to customize the finished size within the given range. This flexibility makes Kinta an excellent choice for stash-busting or for creating a personalized garment that perfectly suits your yarn collection.
