Kindred Square Crochet Pattern by Ashley Edmonds
What is Being Made
The Kindred Square is a 9" x 9" crochet square designed by Ashley Edmonds through Through The Loop Yarn Craft. This intermediate to advanced level project creates a finished square suitable for blankets, afghans, or other modular crochet projects. The pattern is worked back and forth in rows using straightforward construction techniques.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern incorporates several fundamental and specialty crochet techniques to create visual interest and texture. The Kindred Square features the Single Crochet Spike Stitch as a primary design element, which adds dimensional detail to the finished piece. Designers and crocheters will work through multiple row repeats that showcase this specialty stitch technique. The pattern also employs standard construction methods including joining techniques and proper stitch placement to ensure even, professional results. Photo tutorials are provided within the pattern to guide crafters through the special stitches and details, making this intermediate project accessible to those with solid foundational crochet skills.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – Used for foundation and turning chains; beginning CH1 does not count as a stitch in this pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet Spike Stitch (SCsp) – A specialty stitch featured prominently in Row 3 and repeat rows for textural variation
- Single Crochet Join Stitch (Scjs) – Used for joining sections
- Slip Stitch (slst) – Used for joining rounds or securing yarn
- Yarn Over (yo) – Fundamental technique used throughout
Materials and Tools
The Kindred Square requires approximately 100 yards of #4 worsted weight yarn. The pattern was designed and tested using Bernat Super Value in Lavender, though any worsted or aran weight yarn of similar yardage will work. An H/8 5mm crochet hook is recommended for this project. Additional supplies include scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. The pattern uses US terminology throughout.
Gauge and Sizing
The recommended gauge for this pattern is 14 stitches by 14 rows over 4 inches using single crochet stitch. Maintaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the finished dimensions of 9" x 9". Crafters should work a gauge swatch before beginning the full project to ensure accurate sizing.
Pattern Notes
This pattern is worked back and forth in rows rather than in rounds, making it straightforward for intermediate crocheters to follow. The pattern includes repeat sequences marked with *-* denoting where stitches should be repeated. Right Side (RS) and Wrong Side (WS) designations are included to help crafters maintain proper orientation throughout the project. Photo tutorials are referenced for the special stitches and construction details, providing visual guidance beyond written instructions.
