Kimberley Ponytail and Messy Bun Beanie by Jennifer Lee

What is Being Made

The Kimberley is a stretchy knitted beanie specifically designed to accommodate a ponytail or messy bun hairstyle. This 8ply yarn beanie is available in four sizes: Age 2-5, Age 6-10, Teen, and Lady, with finished head circumferences ranging from 52cm to 56cm (20½ to 22 inches). The design is practical for everyday wear while maintaining a neat, finished appearance.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Kimberley beanie is worked entirely in the broken rib stitch pattern, which creates a textured, elastic fabric ideal for the ponytail opening feature. The broken rib pattern alternates knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence to produce a stretchy, dimensional fabric that provides both comfort and shape retention. The beanie is constructed flat on straight needles and then seamed together, with a wool needle used for finishing.

Stitches Used

  • Broken Rib: The primary stitch throughout the entire beanie, formed by alternating knit and purl stitches in a repeating pattern that creates elasticity and texture
  • Knit Stitch (K): Used as part of the broken rib sequence
  • Purl Stitch (P): Used as part of the broken rib sequence
  • Cast On: Initial stitch foundation (99 to 115 stitches depending on size)

Materials Required

The Kimberley requires 1 ball of Lincraft Superwash 8ply yarn in a 100g weight, which provides approximately 190 meters of yardage. The pattern specifies 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) for construction. A wool needle is needed for sewing the seams and finishing the garment. The pattern notes that yarn quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn type.

Tension and Difficulty

The pattern is rated as Easy difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with basic skills. The required tension is 20 stitches and 36 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over the broken rib pattern when slightly stretched, using 4.00mm needles. Maintaining proper tension is important for achieving the correct finished measurements and ensuring the beanie stretches appropriately for the ponytail opening.
