Kiela Socks by Meiju Kallio

What is Being Made

Kiela Socks are a pair of women's socks featuring an elegant cable pattern throughout. Designed by independent designer Meiju Kallio, these socks are worked from the cuff down and are sized for women's US shoe size 7-8 (EU 37-39). The finished leg and foot circumference measure approximately 8.5 inches (21 cm) with no ease, though the pattern is designed to be worn with negative ease, fitting a leg circumference of 12 inches (30 cm) when measured from the cuff placement.

Techniques and Construction

These socks are constructed using the top-down cuff-to-toe method, a popular approach in sock knitting that allows for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the sock as you work. The cable pattern is the primary design element, creating visual interest and texture throughout the leg and foot of the sock. The pattern incorporates reverse stockinette stitch sections, which is created by purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side, providing contrast to the cable work.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Cable stitches – the signature stitch creating the decorative pattern
  • Stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch – providing the base fabric and contrast
  • Make one right (m1R) – an increase technique created by lifting the strand between stitches with the left needle from the back and knitting through the front loop
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – a decrease technique for shaping
  • Knit and purl stitches – the fundamental building blocks of the pattern

Materials and Tools

Kiela Socks are designed to be knitted with 4-ply lace weight yarn, which creates a fine, delicate fabric ideal for close-fitting socks. The pattern requires double-pointed needles or circular needles appropriate for sock knitting in the specified yarn weight. The 4-ply yarn weight provides durability while maintaining the intricate detail of the cable pattern.

Difficulty Level

This is an advanced-level knitting pattern suitable for experienced knitters. The combination of cable work, shaping techniques including increases and decreases, and the precision required for proper sock fit make this pattern appropriate for knitters with solid foundational skills and experience working with smaller circumferences and fine yarns.
