What is Being Made

The Kiara Stirnband is a wide knitted headband designed to cover the ears comfortably while featuring decorative cable patterns that run around the head. This is a practical accessory for cold weather, crafted from pure merino wool. The headband is worked horizontally across, which allows for easy customization to fit different head circumferences. The finished dimensions are approximately 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide by 48 cm (18.9 inches) long, designed for a head circumference of 52 cm (20.5 inches).

Knitting Techniques Used

The Kiara Stirnband employs several key knitting techniques. The primary construction method is horizontal knitting, which means the piece is worked across the width rather than lengthwise. This approach provides significant flexibility for adjusting the final size to accommodate different head measurements. Cable patterns are incorporated as a central design element, running continuously around the circumference of the headband. The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch (glatt rechts), which provides a smooth, classic knit surface that contrasts beautifully with the textured cables.

Materials and Tools

The Kiara Stirnband is knitted using Merino 100% yarn by Katia, a 100% superwash merino wool with approximately 102 meters per 50-gram skein. One skein in white is required for the project. The needles needed are 4 mm (US size 6) straight or circular needles, plus one additional 4 mm (US 6) cable needle for managing the cable stitches during construction.
