Product Description

Kelsey Grace Shawl

Kelsey Grace is a shawl beginning at the bottom with a leaf and a half. New leaves are added on the left side, increasing to a 40”/101cm top border. There is a seed stitch border on the bottom, top and each side. Each leaf is increased with YO’s and decreased with SSK’s and K2tog’s. New leaves are continually added on the left side to create a “kite” shaped shawl. This shawl can be knit in one color or five colors using intarsia. The yarn used in this sample is Isager Bomulin, 65% cotton and 35% linen, spun in Italy.

What Is Being Made

The Kelsey Grace Shawl is a triangular, kite-shaped shawl that grows from a small leaf motif at the bottom to a generous 40-inch (101 centimeter) top border. This intermediate-level knitting project is designed to be worked from the bottom up, with new leaf sections continuously added along the left side to create the distinctive kite silhouette. The shawl offers creative flexibility, as it can be knitted in a single solid color or in five coordinating colors using intarsia colorwork techniques.

Construction and Shaping Techniques

The Kelsey Grace Shawl employs classic shawl construction methods centered on leaf motifs and strategic increases and decreases. The pattern begins with a single leaf and half-leaf at the base, then progressively adds new leaves along the left edge as the shawl expands. This modular approach allows the shawlette to grow organically while maintaining its kite-like shape.

Shaping is achieved through yarn overs (YO's) for increases and slip-slip-knit (SSK) and knit-two-together (K2tog) decreases that create the characteristic leaf texture and definition. These techniques work together to form the tapered leaf sections while controlling the overall expansion of the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Kelsey Grace Shawl features seed stitch borders on all four edges—the bottom, top, and both sides. Seed stitch, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, provides a neat, textured frame that prevents curling and adds visual interest to the shawl's perimeter. The leaf sections themselves are formed through the strategic placement of yarn overs and paired decreases, creating an openwork or semi-open texture depending on yarn choice and personal preference.

Yarn and Materials

The Kelsey Grace Shawl is designed for fingering weight yarn worked as a single strand. The pattern specifies Isager Bomulin, a premium blend of 65% cotton and 35% linen spun in Italy. This fiber composition creates a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for warm-weather shawls with excellent drape and a subtle sheen.

Yarn requirements depend on color choice:

  • One-color version: 5 balls totaling 1,140 yards (1,050 meters)
  • Five-color version: 1 ball each of 5 colors, with each ball containing 228 yards (210 meters) per 50 grams

Knitters will need needles appropriate for fingering weight yarn, typically in the US 1–3 range, though specific needle size recommendations should be verified in the full pattern document.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Kelsey Grace Shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable with yarn overs, decreases, and following a multi-row pattern repeat. The modular leaf construction and straightforward stitch vocabulary make it accessible to those ready to move beyond basic projects, though it does require attention to pattern detail and shaping techniques.
