Keelback Hat by Triona Murphy

What is Being Made

The Keelback Hat is a slouchy, easy-to-wear knitted hat designed by Triona Murphy. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished hat with a relaxed fit and distinctive construction method that makes it engaging to knit. The hat is available in two sizes: Medium to fit heads 21-22 inches (53.5-56 cm) with a finished circumference of 20.25 inches (51.5 cm), and Large to fit heads 23-24 inches (58.5-61 cm) with a finished circumference of 22.25 inches (56.5 cm).

Construction Techniques

The Keelback Hat features an unusual and engaging construction method that sets it apart from traditional hat patterns. The hat is worked using a distinctive approach where the cabled band is initiated with a provisional cast-on. Once the provisional cast-on cable is complete, buttonbands are picked up from both the top and bottom edges. This technique creates an interesting structural element and adds visual interest to the finished garment. The construction method requires attention to detail and makes this pattern suitable for advanced knitters seeking a more challenging and creative project.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

This pattern incorporates cable stitches as a primary design element, particularly in the cabled band that forms the foundation of the hat. The cable work is central to the hat's aesthetic and construction. Knitters will use standard knitting stitches in combination with cable techniques, requiring the use of a cable needle to manipulate and cross stitches. The pattern also involves picking up stitches from provisional cast-on edges, a technique that allows for the seamless integration of the buttonbands. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and maintaining proper stitch counts throughout the project.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Keelback Hat pattern calls for Madelinetosh Tosh Merino DK yarn, which is 100% merino fiber. One skein is required, providing 225 yards (206 meters) of yarn. The recommended color is Grey Garden. The DK weight yarn is worked on US #5 (3.75 mm) and US #6 (4.0 mm) circular needles, both 16 inches long. Double-pointed needles in US #6 (4.0 mm) are also needed, in a set of 4 or 5, for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a cable needle for cable work, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers, smooth waste yarn for the provisional cast-on, a stitch holder, and four buttons measuring 3/4 inch (2 cm) in diameter. An optional crochet hook in US #7 (4.5 mm) or US #8 (5.0 mm) may be used if working the provisional cast-on with a crochet method instead of knitting it.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the sophisticated construction techniques and stitch work involved. The provisional cast-on method, cable stitches, and the unconventional approach to picking up buttonbands require solid knitting fundamentals and comfort with intermediate-to-advanced techniques. Knitters should be familiar with cable work, stitch pickup, and working in the round before attempting this project.
