Product Description

Valley Yarns presents 012 Newport from the Katy Elkins Fall in New England Collection, a must-have women's pullover knit in Brodie. The sweater showcases a fabulous color blocked hem and cuffs worked in a slip stitch rib pattern and a mock turtleneck. Newport is one you'll love to wear and go for a relaxing stroll in the park or wear with trousers for a day at the office. The pullover is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The turtleneck stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. Valley Yarns Brodie is a silky soft cashmere yarn with a touch of extrafine Merino that works up beautifully. The slip stitch pattern is charted and written out.

KE012 Newport – Women's Colorblock Tunic Jumper Knitting Pattern by Valley Yarns

The Newport is a thoughtfully designed women's pullover tunic knitting pattern from Valley Yarns, part of their Fall in New England collection. Designed by Julie Turjoman, this modern layering piece combines colorblock contrast hems, ribbed texture, a mock turtleneck, and subtle vertical design details into a versatile, cozy garment suited to three seasons of wear. With generous positive ease of 6–8 inches and classic drop-shoulder shaping, Newport is an ideal project for knitters ready to build their skills beyond the absolute basics while still working within an approachable, structured pattern.

What Is Being Made

Newport is a women's pullover tunic jumper with a relaxed, generous silhouette. It features a mock turtleneck for added warmth and coziness, drop shoulders with set-in sleeves worked downward from the shoulder, and a hem and cuff treatment worked in contrasting colorblock stripes. Faux visible center seams on both the front and back panels are created by slipping specific stitches, adding a clean vertical design element without any additional finishing work. The result is a modern, polished garment that reads as effortlessly elegant while remaining comfortable for everyday wear.

The pattern is available in eight sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, and 4XL, with finished chest measurements ranging from 36 to 64 inches. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S.

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat (back and forth in rows): The front and back body panels are each knitted separately as flat pieces, making this pattern accessible to knitters comfortable with basic row-by-row construction.
  • Seamed construction: The front and back panels are joined at the side seams, giving the finished garment structure and a clean, traditional finish. This seamed approach also adds durability and helps the tunic hold its shape over time.
  • Stripes and colorblocking: The hem and cuffs are worked in a slip-stitch rib pattern using two contrast colors — Cream (Color 170) and Tan (Color 175) — against the main Charcoal (Color 173) body. These contrast stripes create a modern, intentional colorblock effect at the lower edges of the garment.
  • Slip-stitch rib pattern: Used at the hem and cuffs, this textured stitch pattern creates a dense, stretchy ribbed fabric with visual interest. Slipping stitches rather than working them every row produces a subtle elongated texture and helps the contrast stripe sections lay beautifully.
  • Slipped center seam stitches: A clever design detail where specific stitches along the center front and center back are slipped rather than knitted, creating the appearance of a visible seam line. This adds a vertical architectural element to the garment without any additional finishing.
  • Working in the round: The sleeves are picked up at the drop shoulders and worked downward in the round, as is the mock turtleneck. Circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpns) are used for these sections.
  • 3-Needle Bind-Off: Used to join shoulder seams cleanly and efficiently, this technique creates a neat, strong seam directly on the needles without the need for sewing.
  • Stockinette stitch: The main body of the tunic is worked in classic stockinette, allowing the yarn's natural softness and drape to shine through.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch pattern for the body of the tunic
  • Slip-stitch rib pattern – used for the hem, cuffs, and mock turtleneck sections, worked on smaller needles for a snug, textured finish
  • Slipped stitches – used both as a design element (faux center seams) and as a technique within the slip-stitch rib pattern
  • 3-Needle Bind-Off – for shoulder seam joining
