Product Description
Kayla Scarf + Snood in MODE at Rowan Softest Alpaca – Knitting Pattern Summary
The Kayla Scarf + Snood is a beautifully versatile chunky knitting pattern designed by Quail Studio, available as a downloadable PDF. The pattern offers two distinct accessories in one download: a generously long fringed scarf and a cosy circular snood, both worked in the same stitch pattern and yarn. This is an ideal project for beginner to confident beginner knitters who want to explore simple cable techniques while producing a polished, high-impact result.
What Is Being Made
The pattern includes instructions for two separate accessories:
- Long Scarf: Completed dimensions are 26.5 cm (10½ in) wide and 202 cm (79½ in) long, excluding tassels. The scarf is photographed in Sugar 017 and requires 5 balls of yarn.
- Snood: Completed dimensions are 20 cm (7¾ in) wide and 108 cm (42½ in) long before seaming into a loop. The snood is photographed in Pebble 013 and requires 2 balls of yarn.
Yarn and Materials
Both designs are worked in Softest Alpaca by Rowan (sold under the Mode at Rowan brand), a chunky weight yarn sold in 50g balls. As the name suggests, this yarn has an exceptionally soft handle thanks to its alpaca content, making it ideal for accessories worn close to the face and neck. The generous chunky weight means the fabric grows quickly on the needles, keeping the project engaging and achievable for newer knitters.
- Needles: 1 pair of 5.5mm (US 9) straight needles, plus a 5.5mm (US 9) circular needle measuring at least 160 cm (for the scarf edging) or at least 80 cm (for the snood edging)
- Extras: A cable needle for working the cable stitches, and a crochet hook for attaching tassels to the scarf
Tension
The stated tension is 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm, measured over the cable pattern using 5.5mm needles once blocked. Blocking is an important finishing step for this pattern, as it opens up the stitch definition and brings the piece to its correct measurements.
Techniques Used
- Cable knitting: The pattern features a repeating 20-row cable repeat worked from a chart. Cables are a classic knitting technique where stitches are crossed over one another using a cable needle to create twisted rope-like or braided textures in the fabric. Despite their impressive appearance, the cables used here are simple two-stitch crosses, making them very approachable for those new to the technique.
- C2F (Cable 2 Front): Slip the next stitch onto a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, knit the next stitch, then knit the stitch from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cross.
- C2B (Cable 2 Back): Slip the next stitch onto a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit the next stitch, then knit the stitch from the cable needle. This creates a right-leaning cross.
- Picking up and knitting stitches: A circular needle is used to pick up and knit stitches along the long side edges of both pieces to create a neat, structured edging, which is then cast off knitwise.
- Tassel making and attachment (scarf only): Thirty tassels are created by cutting 120 lengths of yarn, each measuring 64 cm, grouped into sets of four. A crochet hook is used to attach 15 tassels evenly along each cast-on and cast-off edge, giving the scarf its signature fringed finish.
