Product Description
From the moment I saw the first trailer for Catching Fire I fell in love with the Cowl that Katniss is wearing. This is my version of her cowl, inspired by the rustic warmth, charm and strength of hers, but made with a few changes to make it a little more wearable (and warm!) for every day. The original garment worn by Jennifer Lawrence in the movie is not a knitted garment, but rather made by hand weaving. I have a nod to this in my version with the hand woven rope detail that you will see where the body splits at the shoulder. This pattern includes instructions for making and placing these braided details. You might be tempted to skip these so you can wear your creation faster, but DON'T. You will be glad you didn't! The cowl is tall, and ends with the same knitted detail that you see on the body. The side is split to enable you to wear it straight up to block out the cold without it also blocking out your face.
The arm opening can be worn on either side.
Catching Fire Katniss Inspired Cowl
What is Being Made
This is a cowl pattern inspired by the character Katniss from Catching Fire, designed by Dahlia in Bloom. A cowl is a versatile neckwear accessory that drapes around the neck and shoulders, offering both warmth and style. This particular design uses a visually striking herringbone stitch pattern that creates texture and visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project, making it ideal for those working with needles rather than hooks. The pattern is designed as a downloadable PDF, allowing you to access the full instructions digitally. The project falls under the intermediate difficulty level, meaning it requires foundational knitting knowledge and comfort with more complex stitch techniques beyond basic knit and purl stitches.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch featured in this cowl is the Herringbone Stitch, which creates a distinctive diagonal texture reminiscent of herringbone flooring patterns. The designer provides two variations:
- Herringbone Knit (HBK) – Worked knitwise by slipping one stitch, knitting one, then passing the slipped stitch over the knit stitch and knitting into that same stitch before dropping it from the needle. This technique maintains two stitches on the needle throughout the process.
- Herringbone Purl (HBP) – Worked purlwise by purling two stitches together, then before dropping the stitches from the needle, purling into the first stitch again. Like the knit version, this also maintains two stitches on the needle.
The designer chose the herringbone stitch pattern specifically for its beautiful appearance and its ability to establish a comfortable knitting rhythm once you become familiar with the technique. Rather than using abbreviated pattern instructions, the designer writes out each stitch explicitly, making it easier to see exactly what you are doing with your stitches as you work through the pattern.
Materials
This cowl is worked in super chunky yarn weight, which means the project works up relatively quickly compared to lighter yarn weights. Super chunky yarn creates bold texture and drape, making it ideal for showcasing the herringbone stitch pattern. You will need knitting needles appropriate for super chunky yarn, typically larger needles that accommodate the thicker yarn strands.
Project Classification
This pattern falls under the categories of cowls, scarves, and shawls – neckwear and shoulder accessories that provide warmth and visual impact. It is an independent designer pattern from Dahlia in Bloom, offering a unique interpretation of Katniss-inspired design for fans of the series.
