What you'll need
Product Description
Simple ribbed cuff mitt with cable detail on the back of the hand and stocking stitch palm.
Unstretched the finished mitt measures 2.5 inches/5cm across and 7 inches/18 cm long.
As written the mitts should be able to be made from approximately 50g of dk weight yarn.
Line by line written instructions with a cable chart for reference only. Optional customisations are included at the end of the pattern most of which will use more yarn and make the mitts longer if that is your preference. The mauve mitts use approximately 70g of Cleckheaton country.
The gauge is not critical but should be close with larger needles, to achieve similar dimensions.
The pattern has been successfully tested in a number of yarns including acrylic and cotton mixes with similar results.
Kallan Mitts by Tracey Lee
What is Being Made
The Kallan Mitts are simple, short fingerless mitts designed by Tracey Lee as a downloadable knitting pattern. These versatile mitts measure 7 inches or 18 centimeters in length when unstretched and are suitable for both male and female wear. The fingerless design makes them practical for activities requiring hand dexterity while keeping the hands and wrists warm.
Design Features
The Kallan Mitts showcase a thoughtful combination of textured and smooth elements. The back of the hand features decorative cable detail that adds visual interest and texture, while the palm side remains plain for comfort and functionality. The mitts are knit in the round using a thumb gusset construction, which provides a custom fit around the thumb area and ensures a comfortable, tailored feel.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Knitting in the round: The entire mitt is constructed circularly, creating seamless construction for a polished finish
- Thumb gusset: Increases are strategically placed to create shaping around the thumb, allowing for a fitted opening that accommodates the thumb comfortably
- Cable techniques: Multiple cable stitches are employed on the back of the hand, including both knit-based and purl-based cable variations
- Ribbed cuff: The cuff uses ribbing to create elasticity and a secure fit at the wrist
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and techniques:
- K: Knit stitch
- P: Purl stitch
- S: Slip stitches as indicated
- M1: Make 1 increase (or Make 2 for thumb increases), worked using Backwards Loop cast on method, though knitters may substitute their preferred increase technique
- C2R: Cable 2 Right – slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold at back of work, knit the next 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle
- C2L: Cable 2 Left – slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold at front of work, knit the next 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle
- C2RP: Cable 2 Right Purl – slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold at back of work, knit the next 2 stitches, then purl the 2 stitches from the cable needle
- C2LP: Cable 2 Left Purl – slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold at front of work, knit the next 2 stitches, then purl the 2 stitches from the cable needle
Materials Required
Yarn: The Kallan Mitts require 50 grams or 100 metres (110 yards) of 8 ply or DK weight yarn. DK weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that knits at a moderate gauge, making it ideal for creating fabric with good drape and definition in stitch details like cables.
Needles: Two needle sizes are required. Use 4mm/US 6 needles (or the size needed to achieve proper gauge) for the main body of the mitts. The recommended gauge is approximately 22 stitches over 4 inches or 10 centimeters. For the ribbed cuff, use 3.5mm/US 4 needles, which are 2 sizes smaller than the main needles. The smaller needle size creates tighter ribbing that provides elasticity and helps the cuff hug the wrist securely.
Difficulty Level
The Kallan Mitts are rated as a beginner-friendly knitting project. While the pattern includes cable stitches, which require using a cable needle, the overall construction is straightforward and manageable for knitters new to mittens or cables. The in-the-round construction and thumb gusset shaping provide good foundational skills without overwhelming complexity.
