Product Description
This design has been commissioned by a friend, who makes the most delicious chocolate and refuses to wear ugly chef’s caps. Kakao is cocoa in Ukrainian. It’s a very light and breathy reversible spring-summer beanie. If made from mohair, silk, fingering weight wool or cashmere, it would be a great light and warm beanie. Worked seamless in a round.
Size: one size (to fit 54-58 cm head circumference).
Yarn: Vivchari Etno Cotton 1500, 35g, ca. 265 m, 70% cotton, 30% linen, held twice to achieve fingering weight; or any similar fingering yarn.
Tools: 3.0 mm (US 2.5) circular needles or DPNS, 1 stitch marker.
Gauge: 24 sts and 36 rows in 10 cm with stockinette stitch after blocking.
Kakao Beanie by Teti's Knit Garden
What is Being Made
The Kakao Beanie is a reversible spring and summer knit hat designed by Teti Lutsak of Nutsknitwear. The name "Kakao" references cocoa in Ukrainian, reflecting the pattern's origin as a custom commission for a chocolatier friend seeking an elegant alternative to traditional chef's caps. This seamless, bottom-up beanie is versatile across seasons: when worked in lightweight yarns such as mohair, silk, fingering weight wool, or cashmere, it transforms into a warm fall and winter accessory while maintaining its signature light and breathable construction.
Finished Dimensions
The pattern is designed for a single size to fit head circumferences of 54 to 58 centimeters (21 to 23 inches). The finished length measures approximately 24 centimeters (9.5 inches) including a 3 centimeter (1.2 inch) ribbed brim.
Knitting Techniques
- Seamless construction: The beanie is worked in the round from the bottom up, eliminating the need for seaming
- Reversible design: The pattern creates a reversible fabric suitable for wearing either side out
- Gauge-dependent sizing: The pattern can be adjusted by adding or subtracting repeats of 12 stitches to accommodate different head sizes
Stitches and Pattern Details
The pattern employs a repeating stitch pattern worked over 12-stitch repeats. The gauge is measured at 24 stitches and 36 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) over the pattern repeat after blocking, achieved using 3.0 millimeter (US size 2.5) needles. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to obtain the correct gauge for proper fit and fabric characteristics.
Materials
The Kakao Beanie requires approximately 35 grams and 265 meters (290 yards) of yarn. The pattern specifies Vivchari Etno Cotton 1500, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 70 percent cotton. This yarn weight and fiber content contribute to the beanie's light and breathable qualities ideal for warmer seasons, though the pattern accommodates substitution with alternative lightweight fibers including mohair, silk, fingering weight wool, or cashmere for different seasonal applications.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters new to hat construction and seamless in-the-round techniques.
