K856 – Raindrops on Roses Baby Set

Project Overview

The Raindrops on Roses Baby Set is a coordinated knitting project designed by Nazanin Fard that includes a baby cardigan jacket and matching hat. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a complete outfit for infants, combining functional design with decorative lace detailing for a polished, charming look.

Cardigan Jacket Details

The baby cardigan is worked from the top down using circular knitting needles, a construction method that allows for seamless shaping and the ability to try on the garment as you progress. The jacket features an easy lace pattern combined with decorative underarm increases that create visual interest while maintaining wearability for a delicate baby garment.

Finished Measurements:

  • Chest measurement: 24 (26, 28, 30) inches, accommodating sizes from newborn through 24 months
  • Total length: 12.5 (12.5, 13.5, 14.5) inches
  • Sleeve length to underarm: 6.5 (7.5, 8.5, 9.5) inches

The cardigan closes with six decorative buttons measuring 15 mm (⅝") in diameter, adding both function and charm to the design.

Matching Hat

A coordinating hat completes the set, allowing you to create a unified outfit. The hat is worked on double point needles, the traditional tool for small circumference knitting projects.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate project employs several key knitting techniques. The top-down construction method is a popular approach in modern knitting that begins at the neckline and progresses downward, with stitches increased at strategic points to shape the body and sleeves. Stockinette stitch (abbreviated St st) forms the primary fabric, providing a smooth, classic finish. The easy lace pattern incorporates openwork stitches to create decorative texture and visual lightness appropriate for a baby garment. Provisional cast-on using waste yarn allows for seamless finishing at the neckline or other edges where stitches will later be grafted together.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for 874 yards (800 meters) of super fine (fingering) weight yarn, classified as 4-ply. The sample project was worked in Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal, a 100% Merino wool yarn offering softness and breathability ideal for delicate baby skin. The sample colorway used is Stormy, a grey tone, requiring 2 balls of the 437-yard (400-meter) / 100-gram weight.

Needle Requirements:

  • Circular knitting needles US size 3 (3.25 mm) in both 16-inch and 24-inch lengths for the cardigan body
  • Five double point needles US size 3 (3.25 mm) for working the hat in the round

Gauge and Finishing

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit in baby garments. This pattern requires 28 stitches and 36 rows to equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch after wet blocking. Wet blocking—the process of dampening the finished knitted pieces and allowing them to dry in shape—ensures accurate measurements and professional finishing.

Additional Supplies

Beyond yarn and needles, the project requires stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and grafting stitches, stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches, waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique, and six decorative buttons in the Blossom Heather colorway from Knit Picks.
