Product Description
This is a beautiful lace shawlette. I started it with the lace edging and then picked up on the straight edge for the body. I have added beads to add to the beauty of the pattern and give it some weight.
K849 – Doodling in Lace Shawlette by Nazanin Fard
What Is Being Made
The K849 – Doodling in Lace Shawlette is an advanced-level triangular lace shawlette designed to be worked from the edging upward to the top. This elegant accessory features a finished wingspan of 36 inches (91 cm) and a width at the center back of 12 inches (31 cm), making it a versatile layering piece. The shawlette is distinguished by decorative beads integrated throughout the lace pattern, which enhance the visual appeal of the delicate openwork design.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques that require experience and precision. The shawlette is constructed using an edging-to-top construction method, where the triangular lace edging is worked first and then stitches are picked up to continue building the body of the shawl. Bead knitting is incorporated as a decorative element, with beads knitted directly into the fabric during specific rows to create an embellished finish. The pattern also utilizes yarn-over increases to create the characteristic openwork and lace effects throughout the design.
Stitches Used
The K849 pattern features a repeating 12-row stitch sequence that forms the foundation of the lace design. Key stitches and techniques include:
- Yarn overs (yo) – used extensively to create the openwork lace appearance and increase stitches strategically
- Slip stitch (Sl1) – worked at the beginning of rows for a finished edge
- Knit (k) – the primary stitch throughout the pattern
- Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to work into double yarn-over loops
- Decrease stitches (ssk) – slip, slip, knit decreases that balance the yarn-over increases and shape the lace
- Knit with beads (k1b3) – a specialized technique where three beads are knitted into a single stitch for decorative effect
- Bind off – used to secure stitches and finish the piece
Materials
The K849 – Doodling in Lace Shawlette is worked in lace weight yarn, requiring 440 yards (402 meters) of yarn per 50 grams. The recommended fiber is 100% Baby Alpaca in Raspberry, a luxurious and soft natural fiber that drapes beautifully and allows the intricate lace stitches to be displayed prominently. Lace weight yarn is the finest standard yarn weight used in knitting, making it ideal for creating delicate, intricate openwork patterns. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for lace weight yarn and beads suitable for knitting to complete this advanced project.
